Octane booster products

does anyone really think these actually work or just placebo affect! according to: http://www.youtube.com/watch!v=2jbcCr2ll3c, all tested product gave a 2% loss in power compared to not using it at all. good marketing though.

only thing that does work is fuel condiotner to prevent octane dropping to fast. naigbour used it on outboard engine fuel and i got the fuel 6 month later for my lawnmower and it was still ok same power as if i used fresh fuel. no extra power from these products mythbuster have tested octane booster and noticed power loss on some products even the product i talk is just fuel stabilizer called.

Mate used to use toluene at 20-1 in his drag car so he could run heaps of advance and no detonation knock.more horsepower up top.

on mythbusters they used mothballs in the petrol - seemed to
work too - wasn't recommended though.

How to make your own octane booster (this is the basic formula of one of the popular octane booster products). To make eight 16 ounce bottles (128 oz = 1 gal):

100 oz of toulene for octane boost
25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)
3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)

This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and* lubricating agent!". Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral spirits and light turbine oil can be substituted for transmission fluid. Color can be added with petroleum dyes.

Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, Toluene can be purchased cheaply at chemical supply houses or paint stores.

Higher octane is not so much about power increase. But smoother running, and less detonation (pinging), also allows more ignition advance ect

back when our beloved 96 fuel lost it's lead i was part of a select group to do tests on fuel additives. the additive i was testing back to back was one called Nitro methane. i seriously doubt it was nitro but the theory behind this product was it added extra oxygen molecules so when it burnt it was hotter & more explosive. well the back to back tests over 4 weekends showed zero difference in my test bed car which was a Supercharged MR2. maybe with a carb you might have seen a difference but for fuel injection, there was zip. i ran umpteen runs at meremere dragstrip each time & this car was as consistant as they came. 15.2@ 89 mph regardless of which brew i ran.

I'll be using toluene and can get it through work.I tried two paint shops and they dont sell it as its an ingredients for P.

Lol. P heads on high octane no wonder they high as a kite. Cheers everyone for your scientific inputs. Def shed plenty of light. By time you spent 13 bucks on a bottle it negates the extra few cents you spent on ultimate 98 vs 91. They must make a killing on those products.

Yep as others have said octane boosters (toluene) work for high compression/boost applications.

People who use toluene would be adding it to high octane fuel I think. So they can run 30psi in their 10:1 donk lol.

And be careful with toluene, its toxic; ie can enter the body through the skin and, its a carcinogen and we know what carcinogens do folks so do be careful.
