Replacing lifters.easy enough to DIY?

95 mitsi mirage, makes a HELL of a racket (quite embarrassing really).

What is the worst that could happen if I try to replace these myself.!

you screw up the valve timing and mash all the valves, they'll break off and drop into the bore mashing the tops of pistons and scaring the bores so badly you will need a new engine.

hoarder85, Apr 10, 5:30pm
That is what I'm afraid of lol.

How long does it usually take a mechanic to replace them!

bubbles244, Apr 10, 5:33pm
Remove associated parts from atop engine ,remove cam cover and rocker cover, remove cam belt, undo cam shaft bearings and remove cam shafts, remove lifters, fit new lifters, check clearances and tolerances, if okay reassemble, set timing, turn motor by hand to ensure the timing is correct, reassemble associated parts.test drive

bout half a day max $ 45 -55 an hour minimum if they know what they are doing

best to do when you cange timing belt if its got one as cam shaft has to come fully off

What engine! A SOHC 4 cylinder, a DOHC 4 cylinder or a V6!

Pro-Ma MBL8

realtrader1, Apr 10, 6:31pm
Does it have hydraulic lifters possibly! If so that might be the score, low oil / pressure!

carmedic, Apr 10, 7:10pm
I assume we??

phillip.weston, Apr 10, 7:13pm
^^ yeah beat me to it! if it's DOHC there's no need to remove cams - just need a decent flat headed screwdriver or two. If it's SOHC you still don't need to remove the cam, but disassembly of the rocker gear and taking the slack off the cam belt would assist doing the job - plus the SOHC lifters aren't as cheap to buy as the seemingly 'universal' DOHC ones.

MBL8 is good on those

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 11, 8:10am
I was just about to say that LOL

Thanks guys.

Pretty sure it is a DOHC engine (4G91 I think!) will check under the hood in a moment.

I don't think pro-ma will cut it.have considered it, but pretty sure will end up back at square one pretty quickly.

So if it is on a 4G91, it should be relatively simple!

phillip.weston, Apr 11, 10:00am
if it's that loud that proma can't fix it, then it's not coming from the lifters. Sure it's not a bottom end rattle!

a bottle of proma at $40 with a good chance of quietening the lifters is a damn sight better than $200+ for new lifters and the hour+ spent replacing them.

You will be surprised how well proma works, if it realy noisey drain the oil and put new oil in. It usualy works very qiuckly but if its very noisey give it a decent drive. For the cost of a shot of proma its worth a try before you undrtake such a job on an old car.
