I've been contacted by email from someone saying they are with the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team on assignment in Afghanistan, wanting to buy my car - they asked to see more photos of the interior, and haggled a little bit on price and have offered to pay with Safetrader or Paypal and then a 'private courier' wil collect my vehicle. Anyone else been approached recently!

Stay well clear, its a well known scam.

I suggest you read up on scams. If you can't spot this one a mile off you have no hope seeing others coming.

How can this be a scam if you get the cash via paypal! Maybe it actually is a fine upstanding member of the NZDF actually on deployment in Afghan with the Provincial Reconstruction Team wanting a vehicle when they return to Godzone from a 6-7month deployment.

The scam will become apparent when you 'repay' the extra funds they will have apparently deposited for shipping. Once you have done this the initial payment and shipping that they appeared to have paid will be reversed but you will have paid them back the shipping fee they kindly paid you.
Avoid.

No member of the NZDF should be making it known where they are like that. Although it is entirely possible for someone who spends 6-7 moths overseas on deployment a year requires a car on their return, the wording of that email gives everything away.

Also the vast majority of personnel deployed as part of PRT would be Army, and Army Camps are in Linton, Waiouru, and Trentham. You are in an Unlikely are for an army member to be purchasing a car (unlikely not impossible/ unfeasible)

You could tell him to eff off back to Nigeria and die of Aids, along with some comments about his mother's skin colour and marital status that I won't share with this forum.
That's what a colleague of mine used to do, he seemed to find it quite cathartic.

Tell him to tell his "private courier" to bring folding cash upon pick up of the car and that change of ownership must also be sighted before the car leaves your possesion. You will not recieve another email after that.

I have always wondered what would happen if you got the money and didn't repay the " overpayment" and withdrew the money from PayPal ASAP.
