floscey, Apr 18, 8:36am
very cool , looks like old Rothmans colours.

floscey, Apr 18, 8:37am
who would want a Fiat punto !

attitudedesignz, Apr 18, 9:04am
If i had the $ i'd have a huge shed full of GRP B cars.

intrade, Apr 18, 9:08am
i am sure for 95 grand you could make something better then some MG frame.

Group B are considered to be amongst the most extreme rally cars ever built. The class lasted only 4 years (82 to 86) and was eventually scrapped due to the high death rate amongst drivers and the huge logistics involved in keeping such overpowered state of the art (for the times) factory cars running. I think a lot of the appeal (similar to the early McLaren??

I'd rather a C spec Porsche myself, but then I'd rather something I could driveon a daily basis over both.

Check out this hilclimb vid, which isn't group B but close enough to spec.

Museum pieces don't cost much to keep running lol.

Group B's last year at the 1000 Lakes Finland 1986

Full credit to group B cars, if it wasn't for mad times like those where car companies went all out on developing these sorts of technologies I think we would probably not have some of the interesting cars we have today. It's all good and well how fast they went etc but what really gets me is the ways they went about extracting so much out of these cars, back then (and still now) they are all something rare and special, absolutely incredible stuff

fordcrzy, Apr 18, 7:42pm
the metro is the "worst" of the group b cars.id rather have a RS200 or even a lancia 037 (better still a stratos)

sr2, Apr 18, 9:40pm
No I can't agree that V6 in the back seat just does it for me. I??

mgmad, Apr 18, 11:16pm
I naturally disagree, the Metro was quite competitive in it's short life, although didn't win any WRC rallies it did place well and was very popular post Group B banning in national level stuff throughout Europe.

My brother and I were very tempted to go halves in that car, but not being in NZ for the next couple of years makes it a bit hard to justify, even for me.

newtec1, Apr 19, 7:57am
Exactly.I can remember when they first arrived in NZ.Quatro's, Lancia's,MG's, etc. They were very much the beasts of the rally circuit, sheer power and speed with very little restrictions. They were most impressive watching in the middle of a cold frosty night out the back of nowhere,to see them at the finish line with all 4 discs almost white hot trying to slow them down.

rayzor14, Apr 19, 8:23am
Not my favourite of the Group B era to be honest. That said they are now appreciating in value at a similar rate to period F1 cars so it would be a sound investment.
Now if it were a Group B Quatro or RS200 it might be a different matter

newtec1, Apr 19, 8:31am
It would make a mean Targa car.

julian.walls, Apr 19, 8:47am
Many of these new remained unsold and never used in competition up to 4 years after they were last made! - quite different then a standard MG Metro ; some of them i understand were given the Tickford treatment and could drive on the road! I very surprised that 2 are in this country.
There is 1 of 2 Group B Opel Manta 400s has returned to NZ been restored and there is Audi quattro SWB in this country

newtec1, Apr 19, 9:09am
There is also a genuine works Cologne Capri in Auckland, still being used on the track.Worth Mega bucks, not something you would want to bend on the track.

bill-robinson, Apr 19, 9:42am
They could all be road driven as required by rally definition. As far as I know Austin Rover sold all of them fairly easily.

newtec1, Apr 19, 11:02am
Exactly, that's how they drove on the touring stage to the next special.

fordcrzy, Apr 19, 6:53pm
the metro was never a great group B car.
it was a good rallycross car.
dont get the two confused

nightboss, Apr 19, 7:19pm
I remember Tony Teesdale owned and raced one of these for a few years here.

bigmacca, Apr 20, 1:33pm
not fussed on the metro but as a bit of side info.i have some friends who are building a lancia 037 from scratch.it is hopefully the first of many.they are not kit cars ,they are are being built as an exact copy of the original.it has all the panels fitted and is now a rolling shell awaiting its running gear.beautiful car but i almost prefer the shape of the stratos myself.

fordcrzy, Apr 20, 4:07pm
the stratos is a sexy sexy car.

bigmacca, Apr 20, 6:07pm
yip very sexy car the stratos.1 of the blokes working on the 037 built his own lancia stratos.it is interesting seeing both cars together
