Easiest way to clean?

no you would have to complet strip down the engine to its last component. That engine is scrap metal and you will need a new one as cleaning it even when stripped will be a nightmare as it could block up the oil gallery again later on and poof blow it up after rebuild.

intrade, Apr 18, 5:36am
this is a case where you would fill "motorup" in the engine and drive it till it stops . thats all you can do. dont put engine flush in to that it be the last thing you do it will block its oil gallerys instantly with a flush
run warm drain oil fill motorup fill new oil and change filter and drive it if it still runs

This is about the only way without a total strip and clean/reco. Rocker cover off, sump off and using a steamcleaner, give it hellfrom top and bottom. dry with the compressed air then look at it and oh s@#t! theres more and do it again, then remove the oil pick-up and clean it. Reasssemble. Fresh oil and filter. If you just try using engine flush when its that bad, you will just loosen some of the crap and block the oil pick-up screen. no oil pressure, no bearings. Whats that loud clanking noise!

paull, Apr 18, 9:42am
holy hell, never seen one that bad before. i dont reckon its ever seen an oil change or service in its life, what sort of vehicle is it

kcf, Apr 18, 9:52am
whoah nelly, that engine has gotta be poked.Run it until it dies, don't add any engine flush or detergent through it, because that will wash chunky bits down into the sump and insta kill bearings.

Whilst running it until it dies, line up a replacement.

Believe it or not i've seen worse, had a corolla once, previous ownerhadit for 10 years plus.Dont think they had ever changed the oil filter, because it was completely disintegrated. There was metal shards all through the engine, if you ran your finger across the cam you would get splinters.

This is my 91 Toyota Liteace, YM30 which I picked up for $500.

It chews through about 1 litre of oil ever 150km, does 200km to a tank.

I thought it was a pretty solid engine until I took off the rocker cover.

Bought an import Honda accord Wagon that looked just like that under the cover. I was horrified. Apparrently it's pretty common for cars coming out of Japan though. A fella hooked it up to a wicked oil cleaning machine and gave it a full detergent flush etc. Never had a problem with it. That's one option.

You could just give it regular changes and hope that the clean oil will have just enough detergent to gradually dissolve all that crap. Just keep an eye on it and it will probaby be fine. Don't sweat it.

mugenb20b, Apr 18, 7:13pm
Mate, no detergent will dissolve that shit. Do you know how hard you need to scrape to get all that gunk off!

jono2912, Apr 18, 7:16pm
Might give this a go.

mugenb20b, Apr 18, 7:17pm
Shine a torch through the oil filler neck next time you look at buying cars. Although, a $500 van.drive it till she stops. Use used engine oil in it, if it burns so much of it.

daryl14, Apr 18, 7:21pm
Yes I do know. How do you know that nice clean oil with normal detergent in it gently dissolving over time won't clean it up! I've heard a little bit on the subject from people who used to design motor oil.

jono2912, Apr 18, 7:23pm
Will take your advice and use it next time! haha - Was a bit of a project anyway, so may have a go with the steam cleaner, and have play with the engine. Wasn't expecting much for $500 anyhow.

jono2912, Apr 18, 7:24pm
Shhh. You're starting a losing battle.

supernova2, Apr 18, 7:30pm
Our primera looks a bit like that and it has had regular oil changes (every 10) for the 12 years (and 160K) we have owned it.Its at 230K and still get about 600km to the tank and uses no oil either. As far as the op's engine goes I'd try some reasonable oil and see what happens.Just cause it looks that bad dosen't always mean its pooked.Might be worth dropping the pan and cleaning the pick up though.

fordcrzy, Apr 18, 7:33pm
id pull the head off and clean it out. refit the head and cross your fingers

jono2912, Apr 18, 7:34pm
It does need other repairs, you would be correct, I just wasn't expecting this (albeit in my naivety). Just thought I'd see if there's a quick way to clean in out while I'm at it.

supernova2, Apr 18, 7:51pm
If the engine needs other repairs prob better to just grab a 2nd hand unit and shove that in.

snoopy221, Apr 18, 7:59pm
Dude-it's been an **ongoing saga** this van gellis.

Bein a van-ya shld be able to get itz pants off in place-why not price up some rings, big ends-and a headset (with valve seals)and sump gasket.
she's an older engine-so it's not like ya need new head and big end bolts
just a torqen wench from ya hire centre-and probabably a visit to ya engine reconditioner-micropein the pistons out a bit-and fire some ring spacers on the top rings.

fordkiwi27, Apr 18, 8:03pm
didnt this van use mega petrol!

snoopy221, Apr 18, 8:06pm
Yip.username and search on da left.
*ongoing vangellis saga**

jono2912, Apr 18, 8:12pm
Yup :D

jono2912, Apr 18, 8:14pm
The 'complete rebuild set' is only about $190. I was planning to have a crack at it.

snoopy221, Apr 18, 8:16pm
The 'complete rebuild set'
Can ya gimme da ENGRISH version of dat!

mmm!

jono2912, Apr 18, 8:44pm
Probably should of elaborated more :P
Gaskets and seals for top and bottom of engine (as it was described to me) not bearings etc
