What year/model! Basically just a Ford Ranger with different body/trim package

draco27, Apr 19, 5:42pm
not sure on year want something newer. helpful advice, i love the rangers too, what are they like for towing. we would get a 3L

franc123, Apr 19, 5:46pm
Pretty hard to get better in that regard, even the 2.5's will do most of what an average ute buyer would need. Go for it.

draco27, Apr 19, 5:54pm
sorry im a female, do you mean pretty hard to get better than a bt50! we want something that can tow at least 3 tonne long distances and around hills etc. sorry if im sounding dumb, i have not the slightest clue about anything in vechicles

anyone know the difference between a bt50 and a hilux or navara!

mugenb20b, Apr 19, 6:31pm
Yes. The BT50 is made by Mazda, Hilux by Toyota and Navara by Nissan. So, you see, they are all made by different manufacturers.

The most reliable of the three is BT50 by a country mile.

i have a ranger, and have tested the hiluxes when i bought my ute. the Hilux had more power and torque, but higher in the rev range. i found the seating position in the hilux awkward, but thay do have more rear leg room. the lux had a better level of inteerior trim but who cares it is a ute. This is all comparing the hilux to the old ranger and price was a really big factor as well. The new model ranger is way better than the hilux or the old ranger. great gearbox and awesome motor( volvo 5 cylinder common rail diesel). never tested the navara, as the local dealer has a bad rep.One more thing about the hilux they only have a really short oil change interval 7500 kms. vs 10000 kms for a ranger.hope this helps

thanks for the help guys, we are trying to look at everything before we jump in and buy one so just want abit of helpful info from people with experience, weve only ever owned cars so new to the truck/ute thing

draco27, Apr 20, 6:37am
ok so which would you choose out of these and reason why.

459894375 hilux

455727888 mazda bounty

462419350 ford courier

draco27, Apr 20, 11:47am
bumping for some more info.

mugenb20b, Apr 20, 6:06pm
OK, the second two vehicles (Courier and Bounty) are exactly the same vehicles. Seriously. Just different badges, lights and stickers. Both are very good trucks, provided they were serviced regularly. Radiators need regular cleaning, as shit gets stuck between the A/C coil and radiator. Also, every 2 to 3 years, radiators need a professional clean out (rodding out).

The Hilux you are looking at, is the last of the good ones (the next googly eyed model with a common rail diesel is a big f. up).

Reliability wise, all three are about the same, but the Hilux has a better gearbox and front diff, although, miles behind in power.

All three have cambelts, Mazda and Ford take around 15 minutes to change, Hilux around 3 hours.

Best work ute I've driven is bt50, 5 speed manual . Worst vehicle I have ever driven is bt50 auto.

steve98h, Apr 20, 8:07pm
the new hiluxs are shit, injector problems, gearbox problems, clutch problems and rear diff problems.
bt50 is best option by far. BUT! the newer 4x4 1s have weak clutches that fail when towing but are replaced by a heavy duty clutch for free by mazda. 1 of our customers had his clutch fail after only 3000km! new clutch now and fantastic ute!
cheers steve
