A build up of muck in the radiator. blocked fins in the radiator faulty thermostat head gasket
A few ideas to start you off.

When you say started overheating, where did it get to on the temp gauge! As well as above maybe the fan is not coming on.

Is the viscous fan actually working though! does it lock up when hot or is it free spinning!

Warped head from the meathead who thrashed it before you wanted to.

Really! this is your take on the matter! its actully an nz new, in very good condition. Bought off a family friend not a "meathead" . only had 3 owners including me since new. And is non turbo. So no there is no thrashing by so called "meatheads" thanks

helpful to diagnose is also more info, when is it overheating (only at idle, only while moving or all the time), how long from cold before it reaches warm then hot (especially compared to previous)

Try a new thermostat first,,,they a pretty cheap and an easy fix if thats all it is. New radiators can make matters worse as a mate fitted one to his audi that water could not flow through the baffle plates inside the top and bottom tanks had no holes.

I would think it would be easier & cheaper to try a new radiator cap first.

The radiator cap has nothing to do with the temp it only raises the boiling point of water,if the temp goes up fast check the thermostat operation, check the fanbelt tension for slipping,,turn on heater and fan on hi speed see if temp drops, may indicate thermostat problem as water will bypass it.

check the radiator fluid not just the overflow container. my 97 toyota liteace van overheated and found out that you have to top up the radiator not the plastic overflow container , in older cars.the container is just for overflow, not for filling.
