Have you had a go at adjusting the mixture on the bottom of the carb. Its easy, start engine up and warm up, now turn the nut in until engine starts to die then turn back out slowly until it sounds good, problem fixed (o:

Hey guys. The "Landcrab" was the Austin 1800, never the 1100.
I haven't tried that - I'll have a look, I have adjusted the idle a bit, but it didn't like it so had to wind it up a bit again - thanks, I'll get my book out. that's why I haven't touched the carb. I'm just a bit afraid of touching something I can't fix, I can't afford trade rates to fix my cock ups!

This is a really incomplete/incorrect way of setting mixture. Which way is she turning it! Which nut! What about idle setting! What about timing! What if it's actually an HIF carb!
Yeah we could luck out and help, or we could help her dig a deeper hole. At least by not offering half arsed advice without knowing full details she would be no worse off than before. However with all the helpful people offering this advice, if she'd followed it all:
tank would removed (if never done before wiring probably cut, paint around inlet scratched and inlet pipe bent) new pump purchased new plugs, leads, points, condensor mixture messed with
.and the car won't go.
At least at the moment it goes.

today, I'm going to get my book out. and have a look at adjusting the mixture. it has run fine for me the past couple of days, sounding sweet, if you idle for too long it starts to sound a bit lumpy the hotter it gets.I'm putting new air cleaner in today too.The only visible problem I have come across is the sooty plugs. they are the correct plugs, my mini bible tells me this suggests mixture is too rich - so that's what I'll have a look at today :)

Agreed. Always get people telling me "That's not a landcrab, it's too big!" lol
Looking at getting a 1300, mini, metro or allegro down the line. Would like a smaller car !

I always thought the Landcrab was the Austin Maxi.

I could see how some would think that as the Maxi looks just like the 1800 (shares the same doors, as does the Austin 3L). Of course the main difference being the hatch back bit.

You go for it ladyjet, BTW I did say wind the nut in smac (o:

Yeah but into the engine bay or into the carb! ;).and HIF is opposite.

Don't be silly, to the engine bay would be winding it out aye.(o:

You no you should just go to the mechanics or a auto electronic spect instead of guessing .

Lets see -sooty plugs can only be running rich.Assuming that the points and timing are somewhere near right its got to be a carb issue.Im guessing that if the pump was not working as it should that at some stage the carb jet has been wound down to try and compensate for a low fuel level in the bowl.Pump issues now appear sorted so I'm guessing that the carbjet needs winding up a bit.I doubt that a Mini with an ex1100 mtr will be wearing anything other than a standard old school SU.Wind the nut up a flat or two if nothing happens its easy to wind it back to the start point.Wont do any harm.

.and therein lies the difference between those who expect everything done for them, even if they have to pay and those prepared to give itago and increase their knowledge.
I know who I'd help or support first.
Agree with above post.

.except the bit about assuming timing and points are correct.
cowlover,
Apr 25, 7:59pm
I know we shouldn't assume but we have to start somewhere. If the car is running I think it a start point to say the points and timing must be somewhere near right.(If it was me I'd be out with the test gear which I think I know how to use but I don't think OP has that luxury).Interest comments about the fuel grade.I ran Minis for what seems like a century on "standard" (was that 86!) and then91 without problems. My 1300Gt ran on 91 ok as well. The comp ratio of a standard Mini ain't that great so at worst wind the vernier adjustment back a click or two

pull pump offsee if fuel runs freely from tank . Test pump from ajar of petrol .Make sure electrical connections are tight &weatherproof . . Blow the line to bowlwith air .

Go to the battery and see what cable is connected to the body of the car (earth), it will either be negitiveor positive, what ever it is check that the coil is wired the same. The car will run if they are not the same but will run rough.

Ohhh, I'm almost embarrassed - I haven't looked at her in the last couple of days - been painting.I'm going to definitely have a go at adjusting the fuel mixture. the carb has been rekitted, have no idea with what. and yes, it's the SU.Timing and points, tappets were all done not long before I crashed the other car, so that car became the donor for this one.I really appreciate everyone's idea's, I'm more than ever convinced that I had either sucked something up running the tank low. or, perhaps some moisture. it has run like a dream and sounded fantastic for the 5 weeks or so I had driven it (and had probably done 3 - 400k in that time)have replaced the air filter today - allI had time for.Might be the weekend before I get back to her. in the meantime - she hasn't stopped on me again (touchwood) :-)
