Whats the best available under 1000ccs! Looking at something for 60/70% on road and the rest offroad. thoughts!

gunhand, Apr 21, 7:44pm
650 Vstrom. they are very popular as are the 1000cc ones. Hold there value well and good all round bike. But there that many adventure bikes out there now you are spoilt for choice. BMWs are right up there to and reasonable price but useually have high KMs for same doller as a jap equivelent.

whats ya budget!

tegeem, Apr 21, 9:23pm
in not a a budget muzz. looking at the triumph 800xc and the Vstrom thou at this stage over the beemer 800. havent taken a multistrada for a spin yet but im thinking the offroad work ill be wanting to do in WA might be a bit much for it. havent written off the Tenere yet but it might be a bit tall for someone with an average wheelbase.

Honda VFR Crossrunner might be worth a look. Pricy though

tegeem, Apr 22, 6:36am
Id forgotten about the transalp, threw a leg over one of those a while back. Thanks berg, I didnt have the honda on my list to test ride but i will now

i-n-horz, Apr 22, 10:40am
After seeing what Charlie & Ewan put their Beemers through I'd seriously consider one.only downfall is cost i guess.

kazbanz, Apr 22, 1:13pm
throw a leg over a few and see what feels best to you

desmodave, Apr 22, 1:46pm
Just find the 1 that throws the rocks out the back wheel the furtherest. As Kaz says ride and decide, find the 1 that gives you the biggest smile and keep it

muzz67, Apr 22, 7:17pm
i just did 2300km on a 1982 xl250r,, very comfy, 100kph easily, and got up hills and through rivers and bogs you'd never get a large bike through ,,so decide what riding you wanna do offroad before deciding what style bike you want. jm2cw.

I rode all around& across Western Australia[ with pillion ] for a few months many years ago on a BMW GS800,i had the sorest bum i have ever had .lol. it did the trip ok though

ladyjet1, Apr 22, 7:33pm
Aprilia Pegaso 650 :-)loved that bike

tegeem, Apr 22, 9:05pm
The beemer i have ridden. (the 800 not the 1200) very competent off road but i didnt like the onroad performance as much as the tiger xc. damn that triple can go. and to be realistic with myself, I will be doing a good amount more onroad than off. Ive ridden the tenere as well. not bad but a bit on the tall side. the multistrada just didnt fit me well. the vstrom , crossrunner and transalp are on the testride list.

It depends how much offroad and how serious the offroad riding is. A good all round bike is a Suzuki DR650, I have a KTM 640 Adventure which is good on and off road. My brother has a KLR 650, good on the seal and gravel but not on real off road terrain. Another brother has a BMW 1200 which he takes everywhere in some pretty rugged conditions, but it is too big for most riders off road.

A good bike, and OK off road except for mud and ruts. A bit buzzy to be comfortable for long distances on tar seal.

cassina1, Apr 23, 7:48pm
There is a big problem with most of the brands in that getting both feet fully on the ground when sitting on them. I used to ride the old
Honda XL series up to 500cc in the late 70s early 80s and never had a problem getting my feet fully on the ground then. I think the addition of catylytic converters today means they have to make the bikes so much taller.

I bought a Transalp last year after looking at reviews which said it was more rugged for off road riding than the Suzuki Vstrom. To my surprise I found it a far more comfortable long distance tourer
than it looks as the fairing offers good stability in the wind. It felt as powerful and tourquy as a BMW F800. Honda are bringing out a NC700x which looks like the Crossrunner for only $12500 and the $6000 difference in price could make that worth checking out too. If it had been around last year I would have looked at it too being much cheaper than the Transalp also.

cheers, Ive got the Dr 650 in mind for a couple of more serious off road trips im looking at, but can borrow one when i need too. ill look into that one cass:)

virgo77, Apr 24, 6:56am
theres always the mighty honda xr 650 will go anywhere offroad and will cruse the open roads with ease

kaymay88, Apr 24, 5:44pm
vstrom or tenere

muzz67, Apr 24, 6:13pm
them old dr650's aren't very powerful,, dont be tricked by the 650cc,, a drz400 will blitz one.
