Has WOF checking got stricter lately?

robotnik, Apr 27, 5:17pm
In the space of a month or two I've had three of my cars failed for multiple points at the 3 different WOF outlets at different ends of the country - I keep a car in Queenstown, Wellington and Auckland.

Each time they seem to have gone over my cars with a fine tooth comb and uncovered loads of issues which have been present for years, but have never been picked up before. Have they stared getting super tough!

No. You've just got away with it for longer than you should have.

I issue wofs daily and trust me i havent changed 1 bit. If a car is not upto VIRM standards it fails simple as that. I dont fail to get a job i dont care as not looking for work.
All i am interested in is the car is safe to drive on the road as i share the road also.

Hmmm there's a possibility I've just been unlucky. None of the WOF testers were VTNZ and they were all completely different unrelated outlets that did the last WOFs on these cars too. Also the cars are just ordinary 1990s jap imports too, nothing flash.

beblowin, Apr 27, 6:29pm
so what did they fail on and just how many km have each car traveled between warrents!

doug207, Apr 27, 6:38pm
You don't get "unlucky" with WoFs, if your car fails there is something wrong with it, unlucky is driving around in an unsafe car and flipping it on to a school of upper middle class children cooking a BBQ for lower class children as a charitable event.

Simple really.

No these faults were petty. Like today my 1999 Mitsi Legnum failed on damage to the lefthand rear floor brace - 3 years ago I squished the brace a bit by jacking it up on a trolley jack. It also failed for having too dark window tints - these being factory tints that have been on the car since new and no-one has ever had a problem with these in the 7 years I have owned the car.

doug207, Apr 27, 7:04pm
Floor brace! Any damage to the chassis is a fail and should have been picked up earlier.
To my knowledge they can't fail the factory tinted windows (have known people to have issues with Legnums before)

This is the chassis rail under the car. One time I was jacking it up in what I thought was the proper place, and the rail just caved in at this point. It was a cheapy Repco trolley jack without a wide enough base I guess. Oh well that'll be costly to get fixed, nevermind.

As for the windows I am going to go back with some evidence that these are factory.

Ok so I've got a Nissan Gloria, get pulled over nearly every weekend just for having a 'racer car' and I've had it 2years and only had 2 wof's cause I knew I wouldn't pass.so I got my first in nelson and failed in a bent chassy rail, worn rack ends, unsecured kit and obstructing stickers.then went down to invercargill and got one here (where its rumored to be hard as to pass a wot if you have a mod car) and passed with 5% tints, too low and sway bar needing replaced! Luckley I had a friend to fix them wen I knew I had to even though I passed.I've always felt if I slipped by a wof with them
Failing me on something I was luuuucky BUT kind of shocked now I have a baby and truely wanted a wot to make my car safe I just skave threw and pass! So I think it just depends who is inspecting your car and if they genuinely care for your safety.grr doesn't make sence

mischa65, Apr 27, 8:16pm
*with them NOT failing me

pollymay, Apr 27, 8:19pm
Yo shuld do sum skids and make the tires slik, den dey will no u hav a racecar aye

mischa65, Apr 27, 9:02pm
Yeah it would be real cool to kill myself and baby ae.loser.

Went to one of those orange testing stations and was going to fail me on the back door not being able to open that was until I unlocked it from the inside, idiot,

intrade, Apr 28, 5:30am
rule is a fail if it cant open from inside. clearly your right the moron dont knowsthe rules like most.

When I was going to get my retest which I passed, the guy who failed me also failed another guy (when I was getting my retest) because his rear bumper was not fully attached on the driverside (rear bumper), it literally was hardly noticable and he had to pull on it to show the owner. What made it worst, I think that was all it was and the man was a cripple man in a wheelchair - talk about placing unneccessary burden on the poor man.

An old mate of mine was also there for a recheck and said one of his fails was his wipers had too much play - I checked mine & they were exactly the same as his "were" yet mine were passed (by that same guy).

Im thinking some guys must have been caught being to soft and have been told to hardenup or lose their wof licence (or whatever it is).

shuddupowh, Apr 28, 5:52am
He also failed my on non-captive rear springs (which were still the same as my last inspection but were passed last time) so either last check they didnt care or within 6months my springs have compressed themselves even more! To overcome this I put some nice thick pads in which makes them legal again.

my trailer failed yesterday on left hand wheel bearings.took it home and wheel off etc and bearings were fine,no movement at all, soi checkes the other side and they were perfect aswell. lucky i hadnt brought bearings and when i took it back the same guy passed it even though id done nothing to it

eagles9999, Apr 28, 7:02am
My car failed the other day because it had water in one of the foglights. The amusing thing was that it was still working but the other one wasnt but that didnt get spotted. Admittedly there were a couple of other minor issues as well.
