Is it ok (WOF issue) to bypass the breather tube,

pc_uncorrect, Apr 28, 10:11am
on an 1981 Mitsi Mirage 4g11 (Orion) - that one that normally goes from the 'rocker-cover to the air-filter' (on top of the carby) to the enviroment, for example, run the tube from the 'rocker cover, down the side of the engine block, and out to the enviroment!

or will i need some sort of catch-can setup!

You are correct in what you say, however you'd be unlucky to get pinged for that.

Back in the day, most people shifted the breather inlet on the side of air cleaner housing to the inside of the air cleaner element, helped stopped the air cleaner filter getting soaked in blowby, a common modification on Mitsis.

the breather hose from the rocker cover to the air filter is there to supply a small amount of top end lubrication yes you can remove it but it needs to be in a catch can as you will end up with a mess on your driveway and such to to oil sitting in the line and yes it can be a wof issue as they may see it as an oil leak

aarrgh i see now, im glad i asked.

I should have mentioned the car doesnt breath excessively. But all comments bring up some important points. So it should be ok to run to enviroment, as long as blow-by oil doesnt drip/flow from the end of the tube.
BUT, if at some stage, it starts breathing excessively & blow-by oil starts dripping from the tube (to the enviroment), then it could become a WOF issue!, so best to take (beast9) advise & run a catch-can, and avoid any possible WOF issues in the future.
Its my neighbours car, and he's likely to keep the car running for another 30yrs.Thanks guys, much appreciated.

It may not breath excessively while it is sitting there idling, but it is a whole different story at 3000 rpm under load. Pull your dipstick out and go for a drive if you dont believe me. You will have oil everywhere.

Oil catch cans are easy to make if your neighbour cant afford one.

garden hose coke bottle and some tape!

the problem is when it blows out of the breather it means your engine is pi$$ing past the rings

i bought a 1996 toyota cynos that was blowning excessive smoke and had only done 160,000k's.
mate of mine said to block off the breather tube.
after a couple of weeks car stopped smoking and hasn't smoked since.
does it do any harm to block the breather tube!

intrade, Apr 29, 4:44pm
yea well blocking it is not a good idea the pressure has to go somwhere. your dipstick still inn!

that sounds as bad as the honda prelude some lady wanted fixed after it over heated it nipped the piston we put a second hand head on it got it going and had to dowse it in the end as it was smoking out of every hole it could including the breather tube
