Prime.Classic footage of 1959 F1 and a concours. (Sat Apr 28th.)

And a MKI Jag like my old one, I saw a Lotus Cortina and a Bugatti Royale as well.

chevcamaro, Apr 28, 8:13pm
yes nice cars in that clip i just watched.

Didn't see a Bugatti Royale. There was a nice Alfa Romeo though.I think the only Royale in England is the copy that Tom Wheatcroft had made and was displayed at the Donington racing car museum.Several exhibits have been sold off recently and his son Kevin has incorporated part of his military vehicle collection. The ex Chris Amon F1 March that used to hang on the wall is being raced at Monaco in May, by ex-pat kiwi, Roger Wills.

We missed maybe the first 10 seconds and caught footage of a 1959 GP somewhere and noticed the P25 BRM and the F1 Aston Martin in addition to the F1 Cooper that was central to the story.

Seems odd that there was only the one single seater in the concours - and I don't remember ever seeing a single seater entered in any concours!Good episode though, even with a new Barnaby lead actor and some very nice cars.

Good TV.

That burgundy coloured coupe, was that not a Bugatti!

hyphen, Apr 29, 8:33am
yeah, nice cars, but can you believe that blondie was in the upper 5th form!

socram, Apr 29, 1:25pm
No, the burgundy coupe was an Alfa. The Bugatti Royale is the size of a small house and believe me, it would have dwarfed anything else on show, including the Bentleys. That Alfa was similar to a Bugatti Atlantic and I nearly mistook it for a Bug too.

Agree.Blondie was a very unconvincing 5th former, even as jail bait!

Who can tell me where that episode was set!

socram, Apr 29, 3:57pm
Sorry, no idea, but I think if you Google Midsomer Murders, they'll probably tell you. I thought it looked a bit like Windsor Castle in the distant background in one shot, but significantly, one of the stands was for the Brooklands Society (based in Woking no doubt) and I think there was an Octane magazine stand there too.We didn't record it this time, though we usually do.

"The producer of Midsomer Murders asked if our club could help by providing period cars from the 1950s and 1960s. Of course, this was not a problem; members soon rallied round and we had the nine cars required. The first part of the filming took place at Popham Airfield in Hampshire and only involved the 1960 Lotus-Climax F1. The second session followed a couple of weeks later at Bearwood College in Berkshire; this was to be the location for the Midsomer Classic Car Show and here we had seven Lotus and one Bristol Special taking part. We all had to be ???background??

rob_man, Apr 29, 4:23pm
Yes, that's the car I glimpsed. I thought it was a Bugatti, then the Bugatti Royale got a mention straight after so I ass u me d.

Not too sure about advancing the spark before hand cranking though. Seen a broken wrist or two, and sore ankles from kicking over old bikes.

rsr72, Apr 30, 7:16am
The number 47 Cooper an ex-Bruce McLaren car!

socram, Apr 30, 8:32am
Not sure about that. Someone will know!It would have to be a UK based - car and there are several.

If 1959, it would have been a 2.5 litre Climax engined car, as the formula changed to 1.5 litres in 1961, when the Ferrari 'sharknose' was dominant - and Enzo Ferrari destroyed them all when the new model came out, having no sentiment for old race cars.Musician Chris Rea has had a replica made.
