How long are you looking to spend there in total! LA to Chicago would require about 3 weeks one way if you want any value from it.
In 2010, I spent 3 weeks on the road from San Francisco to Dallas, covering as much of Route 66 as I could on my trip. Even then, I nearly ran out of time as by the time I left Dallas, I had 4 nights left before my flight out of San Fran. I drove from Dallas to California in one sitting as a result.

The US is very, very easy to get in and around. The street signs are almost identical, they speak the same language, and GPS makes it that much easier in the main centres, in my experience, anyway.

Hi vjregal. Thanks for that. I'm looking at maybe 4 weeks. Did you go as a group or on your own and did you hire a car. It's a big trip by the sounds of it. Im looking at starting in Chicago and then to LA

Hired a car, went on my own. 4 weeks is a decent timeframe, it'll be a hell of a trip.
Oh yeah.DON'T get a GPS from a rental firm either, and check if your travel insurance covers the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) which is s a US$25-$35 a day addition to the rental price (though Hertz includes it). :-)

Do the beach hop tour; ie Noddy Watts tour. Read all about it on the beach hop sitewww.beachop.co.nzthen follow the links.
ourfriends did it thru someone who organises or has something to do with the Whangamata Beach hop. They had a fantastic time.

Try Classic Driving Tours. They run fully escorted Route 66 tours driving Mustang convertibles. Tour lasts about 3 weeks and about 15 cars go each tour.
