Unregistered and Unwarranted Vehicles

chch_cowboy, Apr 30, 9:39pm
Evening all, Just a question regarding an unregistered and unwarranted vehicle. My mother is due to leave the country soon and has a car that I could certainly use for a while, however it is unregistered and unwarranted and has a problem with the starter motor, aswell as a rattle coming from the engine (or so im told). What is the best and most cost effective way of getting the vehicle checked out, and assessed for cost to repair, without breaking any laws!

Inherently I dont want to spend money to get it registered to get repaired if it will not be cost effective. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are legally allowed to drive a vehicle on the road without a WOF providing it is only to and from a place of repair.
So if i was you i would find the closest place that does wof inspections.Make a appointment and take the car there. If it fails you have paperwork to drive home as legally allowed to.If you get pulled up driving there ask the Police Officer if they dont beleave you to follow to place where booked in.

is it on hold. if its not on hold then change it in your name. If your mother has let registration laps and not paid then the car is deregistered after 1 year !

also if it is deregodforget it it be scrap metal only unless its wort loads of money almost new as it will then need to be reregisterd and thats a huge hassle proof of previous registration strip down interior for inspection just as if it was a fresh import they even mesure all your brakes for thickness. 91 onwardsbelow is less tuff inspectionor was.
further more if your mother has not paid the registration of the car then its a good chance they will stop her at the airport and the plain will go without her that day. god by money for ticket and demand of all outstanding money is enforced. at least that is what you hear from all the new tv spots they make .

if it is unregistered for lessthen 12 month you want to put it on hold if its within the first 2 month unregistered then its free to put on hold 2 month and 1 day a fee has to be paid, and the fee gets larger till 1 year is up then it gets deregisterd automatically and 1 year registration has to be paid. baycorp then gets instructed to collect the money , and that would be what stops you at the airport the notice popup wanted by baycorp.
Its a police state worse then china soon nothing to do with me i just tell you what is going on most country operate the same way.

As above, depends on whether it's deregistered or just unlicensed and whether it has a current exemption from continuous licensing.

Plug thee registration number into http://www.carjam.co.nz (register, it's free, and do a free lookup - you get 3 free per month) and check what the status is with regard to licensing and registration.

Starter problem is no major but you'd be best to get the engine noice checked before proceeding.

Not true.
To do it legally, you need totow/trailer it there and drive it back if it fails.
You can legally drive it to a place of repair after a failed WOF, not before.

No, you may operate a vehicle on the road solely for the purpose of bringing it into compliance.

Good one tonyrockyhorror.

Ok, fair enough.
My WOF issuer obviously needs some extra training, as that's what he told me.

just call amobile mechanic or car inspection service and put these questions to them . $ 150-200 no dramas.

does it still have its rego plates and the VTNZ vin plate revited to the vehicle.all goes well it will cost 550 plus 9.50 for new plates and years rego and wof. flat mate did it celica.

alan1111, May 1, 5:01pm
Cheers i thought i was right its what i been telling my customers all these years.

msigg, May 1, 5:16pm
So can i drive to get it tested. "yes so long as its safe to do so". I think insurance may be scarce if you have a accident. That amount of time brakes could be a problem!. mobile mechanic is the way to go.

intrade, May 1, 5:17pm
only vtnz and so can test deregod cars if we talking deregistered.

msigg, May 1, 6:04pm
Yea intrade the mobile mechanic can give you an idea how much the repairs will be and what the cars are worthand what needs doing/may be scrap.

lookoutas, May 1, 6:18pm
So I didn't need to borrow D plates then !

Good to know - cheers for that.

tonyrockyhorror, May 2, 6:45am
That, too, is a myth. No WoF & vehicle licence doesn't mean your insurance company can avoid the policy. There must be an actual fault which was material to the crash.

lookoutas, May 2, 3:36pm
Have actually printed that legislation out - will carry it with me next time.

Didn't help poor Zeph :(

eagles9999, May 3, 10:57am
Absolutely! But that wont stop them trying to weasel out of liability.

tonyrockyhorror, May 3, 12:55pm
The Insurance Ombudsman will soon set them straight.
