Price of Semi Slicks

Those in the know, is there a substantial difference in price between 15" and 16" semi slick tyres! Approx 205/50r15. Looking at either Toyo R888 or Dunlop DZ03G. I have to make the decision to either run standard 296mm r33 GTSt rotors or have them shaved down to 288mm. Shaved ones will fit under 15" rims but standards require 16"

To run shaved I have to get n16 pulsar hubs, or to run standard I have to get GTi n14 hubs and make a dogbone to mount the R33 4 pot calipers onto. The advantage of standard diameter is easier replacement.

So what I am ultimately trying to decide on is whether the cost of running 16" is worth the convenience of off the shelf rotors. There would be better cooling with the larger wheels I would suspect too but with a sub 1000kg car I don't think these brakes will have trouble either way.

Hmmm, now what would Burt Munro have done in a situation like this!

savanna71, Apr 29, 11:58am
If you can afford them i would strongly recommend Yokoham advan A048.

215/45/16 Medium compound Silverstones $185 at Palmside Motors

morrisman1, Apr 29, 12:06pm
Are they FTZ type RR tyres! Silverstone has been bought by toyo from what I have heard, so I don't have full confidence in the continuity of availability. $185 is certainly a good price though and that size is within range.

We have been running those tyres in 185/55r14 and they have been pretty good but aren't wearing well. I suspect that is more to do with the current suspension setup though.

morrisman1, Apr 29, 12:14pm
Burt munro would have left the standard drums on

nathanmac, Apr 29, 12:32pm
I'm thinking he might have taken his neighbours kitchen knife to his old standard tyres.

steve312, Apr 29, 2:38pm
Burt wouldn't have been bothering with the brakes either since the intention is to go faster, not slower.

sell the discs and rotors and get r32 gtst 4 pots. they are 280mm dia and the caliper is the same as a r33 caliper apart from being spaced differently for the smaller disc. they take the same hub as the r33 brakes so if the r33 will bolt straight onto the n14 hubs so will the r32 brakes

morrisman1, Apr 29, 3:30pm
Id just make the dogbone to suit the rotors. Ive already got the calipers, and will be making dogbones to fit them to the n14 hubs, and will just make them to suit the required caliper position. No sense in going smaller than available as going larger will give more mechanical advantage for the same effort and brakes will last longer, run cooler and have more stopping power.

Yes I know the difference between the 280mm and 288mm rotors is probably not much but at least with the larger rotors I can go to r32 GTR rotors if I wish, which opens up a few more aftermarket options

Tires will give you more bang for your buck than anything else.Brakes only help when brakinghp only helps when accelerating.Tires help all the time.A good semi slick is worth a good two seconds on most tracks or hill climbs.Generally you get what you pay for.The best current tires are probably the Dunlop D03g in S1 compound. They are also available in M and H compound if you want longer life. The softer the compound the faster you will go at a greater cost for every km travelled.High performance tires are not cheap. The toyo 888s and silverstones are not really in the league of the dunlops bridgestones yokohamas

morrisman1, Apr 30, 9:53am
I found today that the price of the 280mm rotors is about 1/3 of the 296mm ones, so in interests of cost saving I think Ill take that advice and use the 280mm rotors. Ill still see if I can use the existing calipers though.

would 2 pot turbo Stagea front callipers and 280mm rotors be of any use to you!

morrisman1, Apr 30, 11:34am
The stagea is essentially an r34 isnt it! They are a different setup from what I have read

motorboy2011, Apr 30, 11:52am
if r32 280mm rotors and r32 4 pots will bolt on to your setup, then so will stagea 280mm rotors and 2 pots. I converted to 4 pot fronts on my stagea with r32 4 pots (straight bolt on). I never ended up using the 280mm r32 rotors as they were exactly the same size as the factory stagea rotors

motorboy2011, Apr 30, 11:53am
above is on a 4wd trubo stagea, not sure if the rwd ones have the same front brake setup

morrisman1, Apr 30, 1:29pm
How thick were your rotors! These here are 280mmx30mm. There are thinner ones fitted to some vehicles.

motorboy2011, Apr 30, 1:33pm
I'll measure them tomorrow morning, I know when I measured the thickness of the gts4 ones compared to the stagea one they were both exactly the same thickness

motorboy2011, Apr 30, 9:35pm
just checked, they are 30mm thick.

R32 GTS-T/4 4 pots are the same as 300zx ones also and very similar to S14 & S15 Silvia & 200SX but the S's run a heavy cast steel caliper, I think they all run the same disc though.
The Stagea 2 pots are the same caliper as you find on U13 Bluebird turbo, also some non turbo R33, C34's & some other random models but the U13(& some other models) have a 4x114 disc and its also the same size as a R32/Z33/S14/S15 4 pot discs
R34 GT-T has same brake specs as R33 GTS25T as far as I know and BNR32 GTR is same as R33 GTS25T but way more popular so thats why there are way more listings.
And using R33 GTS25T calipers with R32/Z32 280mm rotors in a factory setup will have a slight over bite of the disc and the calipers are sligtly bigger also so that may make any gain in the smaller disc a waste of time even with custom caliper mount.

morrisman1, May 2, 5:34am
motorboy, can you confirm that your stagea rotors are 280 x 30mm with an overall height of 54mm! I cant find any specs on the net. Also they are 4x114.3mm stud pattern right!

motorboy2011, May 2, 6:24am
Here is where we come unstuck lol, all Stageas are 5 stud. All other specs are as you require, 280 x 30mm, total hight 54mm. I think I have some r33 gts25 rotors in the garage somewhere, they may be the specs you want, on 4 stud.

morrisman1, May 2, 7:39am
the 4 stud non turbo ones are probably the 22mm thin ones. Bugger about the stagea ones, I was hoping to get away with no redrilling but as I suspected all the turbos are 5 stud

1ollie, May 2, 11:57am
Im pretty sure U13 Bluebird turbo has the discs your after, a mate has some on his S13 200SX I will try get a thickness measurement today.

magtyredirect, May 3, 9:43am
It really depends on what size tyres you are looking for, As an example Toyo R888 in a 225/50/16 is basically the same price as a 225/50/15, but a 245/45/16 is roughly $100 more.I would have to say that the Toyo is one of the best "bang for buck" tyres around
