Not all what they cracked up to be are they! I have a small leak up the side of mine.Radiator isnt even that old. Told by radiator bloke that they quite commonly corrode and leak up where the top coolant hose goes. Alot he said are only 6months old.

Is it a mishimoto or something!
Lots of them use chinese cores which is fine but it's who finishes the end tanks you have to watch out for cause it can be very sub par.

Alloy in my cefrio is 22 years old and my Skyline is 14 years old both original radiators and no problems you must keep antifreeze in them changed each 12 months
jason18,
May 3, 3:05pm
Yeah it has antifreeze. Not sure what brand but they are using a special resin to fix it.Why the angry face!

Was it ground ! I'm not sure how much difference it makes, its just something I heard when I was shopping around for one
jason18,
May 3, 5:04pm
Yeah he also mentioned that. So will ground it once its fixed up.

if its an after market on it needs to be mounted on rubber mounts not just bolted to the radiator support! Electrolysis wont eat away at a radiator really fast.it will still take a few years unless ya got a heap or power/current running through ya radiator Id look at the mounting of it first,we sell all types of alloy radiators and have never had a problem Gav
smac,

Sounds more like the hose has been too tight an angle and has put pressure on the join at the top. Vibration + tension will kill an alloy weld.

Could they need a anti corrosion anode same as you would have on the leg of the outboard motor. The situation is the same with pos and neg 12 volt power issues to promote corrosion.
jason18,
May 3, 5:41pm
Yeah It has rubber mounts

STA have big alloy radiators for $220+, got one for my big block.
bellky,

Radiator should be insulated by rubber mounts and it's a zinc anode.

Because a lot of the posts on here could be avoided if people looked after their cars properly
jason18,
May 4, 6:29am
Yeah and I do.
jason18,
May 4, 6:30am
Should last longer than 6 months regardless
bellky,
May 4, 6:31am
You tell 'em!
martin11,
May 4, 6:35am
If your radiator lasted less than 6 months something is wrong , with its installation or maintenance or its was not a good buy
jason18,
May 4, 6:39am
I just bought the car. A week ago. The radiator guys tell me that its very common for alloy radiators to pop there guts after 6 months or so. Did you not read my first post! Quote Told by radiator bloke that they quite commonly corrode and leak up where the top coolant hose goes. Alot he said are only 6months old. Unquote

I take this to mean he doesn't work on alloy radiators and/or can't weld alloy so he trashes them. Call me a cynic. There's plenty of OEM and aftermarket alloy radiators that are fine for decades. Maybe whoever put your one in did a crappy install (ie tension as described above) or it was just crap quality to start with.
jason18,
May 4, 6:48am
Yeah Im thinking its just a cheapy. Seems to be installed ok!

He is probably the most popular and reliable radiator shop in Hamilton. Highly recommended
martin11,
May 4, 6:50am
Sounds like you have an electrolosis problem to cause corrosion that quickly . That can be tested for and fixed very easily by someone that knows what they are doing
jason18,
May 4, 6:50am
Yeah he said that too. He said to try grounding the radiator.
