looking at a 3 litre car, pref. European what do MBers think. Audi A3, MB CLK , or something else. Not Aussie tho. I like to be a bit different

Audi A3 is more "small size" , I assume to you "aussie car" means Falcon/Commodore ! which are both large. You can get a 3l Audi A4 in the high-spec models but do you mean an Audi A6 etc !

Buy a $5k car and do something useful with the other $15k.

Not A class - been put off them by friend who was an MB mech. I get a bit tempted with a Peugeot coupe or even a Fairlady

And have checked parking space and an MB CLK will be ok

A workmate has said Audi's often have transmission problems especially autos on imports, something about not having a servicing record.

Triumph Stag is the best option. It has a 2997cc engine, 146bhp andget the manual transmission. The standard 4 speed overdrive gives 6 forward speeds or can be modified easily to get 7 speeds (more that Audis or BMW) The Triumph is more reliable the BMWs and Audis. Go for the Margenta with Black upholstery. V8 is the only way to go!

Not sure it matters too much but it will be used about 3 or 4 times a week and for monthly trips

True and saw one with a G plate the other day but I'm picking it would be nearer $80K than $20K .think it was a 2010

Not if it was a supra, Toyota stopped making them a long time ago.

Hi texastwo, The Audi/VW/Skoda products around your price range are an excellent choice as VW spent eye watering amounts of money designing/perfecting the technology that went into their new vehicles of circa 2004 and onwards.
The Transmission problems thing is mostly just outdated/uniformed nonsense. The Audi/VW transmissions that did have problems were "sealed for life" units made by Aisin (Japanese company partially owned by Toyota) and were the same units as fitted to lots of brands. Even those transmissions were actually reliable so long as you servcied them and ignored the sealed for life nonsense.
The transmissions in the Audi/VW/Skoda's you are mostly looking at are the excellent DSG dual clutch automated manual units. They are very reliable and just need a straight foward service every 60'000km. You will hear lots of silly wives tales and nonsense about those too, but its generally just that, nonsense and things taken out of context. Basically NZ has a Euro car hating/misinformation mindset thanks to decades of dealers flogging used Japanese cars and trying to justify their silly prices and lack of features.
The Audi A3 you speak of is a fantastic car, but do be aware that the 3.2 is not really any quicker than the 2.0T in the real world. You may wish to consider the 2.0T as it gives you exceptional economy to go along with all that power.
Also, consider the Golf GTI, the 2.0T A3 and the Golf GTI are mechanically the same car, the Golf is sometimes the better priced vehicle and because of the way Golfs were sold they are often higher spec.
Have a drive of the larger Passat and Skoda as well, these are available with the same engines/transmissions, you may prefer the ride of the larger car.
Best of luck with your decision. if it were me I would be focusing primarily on the VW/Audi in that price/age bracket. I like the Mercedes but find them over priced for what you get compared to the Audi/VW.
