recently had engine work done which was skimmed heads and new head gaskets , cambelt and water pump and had one crank replaced which was second hand but supplied by pro build engines , car now has loud tapping noise on that side which crank was fitted ! any ideas would be very help full

oops and its a subaru single turbo

What do you mean on ''that side crank was fitted!Crank is in the middle. Did they use the correct thickness head gasket and measure the compression ratio after calculating the skiming! Im think they might have the squish area wrong. Do not drive it until you get a proper subaru specialist look at it.

Maybe he means cam

The thing is they need to be skimmed and measured. Max skimming is 0.012"/0.3mm and both heads need to be equal cc'ed to get a even compression ratio and squish area. ask them what the new compression ratio is and if they don't know then they did not work it out which will probably mean engine out and heads off again.

Yep, my crystal ball says cam aswell

Hang on why was the cam replaced! Might be a bent valve or incorrect shim clearance. compression test would be interesting

hi sorry for late response and yes sorry it was cam and yes both heads where skimmed and crack tested . all i no is that it had m8 head gaskets fitted , not sure about compression and i do recall the guy doing the job saying something about the shim clearance , the other cam had a burnt lob on it or something likethat

Wonder if they used genuine sti cam! i would say they wouldn't have or the repair bill would have been the price of a replacement motor.
I actually have a pair of v5 sti heads in the shed, if the price is right i'll part with it. wonder if its got a bent valve though aswell it seems they may have fixed the fault but not investigated the reason behind the fault. cam lobes don't just burn for no reason and you can't just bang a mates headgasket on it you must get the thickness right. compression test please:)

okay thanks will look into it and yeah im wondering if it was a genuine sti cam , i priced a new one and it was $800 for cam. car never made this noise untill cam was changed have found a near new sti cam in auckland for 95 dollars . what should the compression be thanks

Should be over 130psi that would depend on kms etc but and you might find it hard to comp test it properly with engine fitted as its difficult to get a good seal with the tester but what you would be looking for in your case is a drop in 1 or 2 cylinders, another possibility is the they got the shims mucked up, exhaust valve and intake valve have different size shims from factory and the rebuilder should have check the clearances and purchased the correct size shims before having installed the cam if the cam was correct that is,. i highly doubt that you purchased a genuine v5 sti cam for $90 as selling 1 cam would mean the head would be useless and those heads are very sort after as the V5/V6 cams have the highest lift in any of the sti range.

thank you very much for you help will look into this and will post the outcome thanks maybe i just buy new heads and cams

Have the valve shims been set up right. Pretty sure that sti uses shims and not hydaulics
