A mere female here but I have a '89 mazda familia which ws jerking a couple of different days recently, stalled and restarted okay.Couple of days later stopped and wouldn't restart.A friend- no mechanic- lifted hood and could see a hole in the catalytic convertor.Could this be the cause of my car jerking, stalling and not going and is it smething that could be replaced without going to garage!Any other ideas appreciated. TIA

Cut it out and weld in a bit of pipe.

Are you able to see the catalytic convertor from the engine bay !,thought they are normaly a bit further back !.

Then sell the convertor to a scrapmetal yard.

#5 thats exactly what I was thinking. The cats sit about 2 feet back from the exhaust manifold so are not visible from the engine bay. but may be an odd car so never know.

Japanese import Mitsubishi Mirages had em bolted right up front and it sort of formed part of the exhaust manifold from memory. I replaced the one on my parents( now mine since they have both passed away now) old Mirage CGF 1500cc 1985 model with a NZ new manifold , bored and tapped a hole to remount the O2 sensor and never had a problem from then on. It had the electro jet carby on it!

Just do as #2 and #6 suggested and cut it out, put a piece of pipe there, and sell the cat to a scrappy. the car will run better and the scrappy will probably give you 80+ bux for it. Win Win situation, you dont need it.

Manifold & cat unit was cracked is why I replaced it, that was in the early 1990's

I've had a couple mazdas with the cat bolted to the exhaust manifold. does the car feel really gutless and underpowered!

$80 damn, down here we would be lucky to get $15 from any of the local scrappys,And to top it off we would have to tell them its a convertor otherwise they would just pay steel price

Is the hole where the O2 sensor should be! Does the hole have an internal thread!

I'm not sure, But I think Simms gives you $60 per cat.
