fark i shouldda done that with my old corolla carby. that's kiwi ingenuity, i have never thought of that. if he extended it and sectioned it off from engine heat, it prob run pretty sweet.

Yes a K&N (factory spec) air filter replacement would be the ideal.

To be fair, may be as simple as the old oem one was shagged and he couldn't readily get hold of the right replacement so took it out and stuck the pod on the end instead because it happened to fit and be off-the-shelf.

Dammit. I was going to take the factory filter out of my Benz V8, and put one on the front of each snorkel that goes to the front of the car ! Not now, in case one of you buggers notices and laughs at me !
