Hi all, does anyone know of any major issues with these cars! Seen a couple of comments on the net about head gaskets going unexpectedly but not sure if thats a genuine issue or 'user error'! Any feeback would be appreciated.

You're talking about a nearly 20 year old car, I think most of the issues would have raised their head by now IMO (o:

High oil consumption is always a problem as well as high fuel consumption. They usually crack heads not blow head gaskets.Weak autos is a common problem. Plenty of better cars out there.

depends on engine and transmission combo but as said above they are getting a bit old and probably better models to look at. If going for a Chariot try going NZ-new with manual transmission with a service history.

also it's only the 2.0 SOHC 8V engines which tend to crack heads, and they are only fitted to the earlier models, the '93/'94 should have the SOHC 16V or DOHC 16V which aren't prone to cracking heads at all.

Its an 1800 16v SOHC with Auto, NZ new. Any issues with these models!

quite underpowered but being the base model it wont have much to go wrong. The 1800 is prone to leaking oil from the edge of the head gasket near the top of the transmission bellhousing - but it would be fairly obvious if that was the case. Most of them would have had the had gasket replaced by now I would say. I would pay more attention to when the cam-belt was last done (easy job on them anyway) and any transmission servicing. If it tends to jolt or slip between gears then perhaps walk away. Also make sure it engages overdrive fine as they can wear out the overdrive clutch pack (cheap to replace though).

Mechanically it's essentially a mix of Galant and Lancer parts so spares and servicing wont be expensive.

ric -I can't add anything to what PW has said. I agree 100% with his post above except the really emphasise the mention regarding the transmission.
There is a known issue with the 1-2 clutch pack that although an easy fix will cost at least $1500 to repair.
