what oil should i usewhat mixture

a.woodrow, May 15, 2:59pm
2 stroke oil
anywhere from 10:1 to 50:1, depends on what year, what size, what carb, etc

You could use the 30 grade or 30/40, they will run with anything.

red97, May 15, 3:20pm
i use 30-40 at 10 to 1 at that ratio anything remotely slippery will be fine
if your not leaving an oil slick your not using a seagull

I still remember the smell of dad's one as it sat on the back of the boat and chugged along.

Haha so true. great wee motors.

Seagull's have bronze bushes for main bearings, and not much in the way of oil seals - so that's why 30 oil at 10:1 is recommended. But I found they went well on 2 stroke at 25:1 (lawnmower stuff of the period). I would get no start Seagull's in at spring time - by the time what little petrol is in the mix evaporates the carb is just full of oil.

we have successfully run one on BP98 & Castrol TTS @ 40:1 and also with 95 and Valvoline outboard at 50:1 for hours on end

(the fuel was bought for mx bikes and jetskis )

Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
Models manufactured from 1931 to 1945 had a recommended petrol-to-oil mix of either 8:1 or 10:1. From 1942 models specified a 10:1 mix which was specified up to 1979. After that date a 25:1 mix was specified, which was again changed for the introduction of the models 125 and 170, but these engines with the 50:1 mix soon failed, and British Seagull again specified 25:1. This relatively high percentage of oil was necessary due to the way the crankshaft bushings worked. Early engines used short bushings, and later ones used longer bushings, hence the changes in oil requirement. The longer bushings were, in fact, used from 1967 onwards, and the engines from 1967 to 1979 can be used on the 25:1 mix by making carburettor adjustments.

Get yaself a TAS. Search on trade me 1 hp TAS air cooled damn near a quarter of the weight of a seagull.
(Actually damn near HALF the weight of a pair of average dingy oars.)
