Now this is real motorsport!

this sort of racing should be encouraged in NZ instead of the $40k minimum deposit one make racing.
http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/ have a read of the rules.they are funny as. http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/pricesandrules.aspx

ninja_man, May 14, 5:43pm
id love to do that!

stevo2, May 14, 6:00pm
kool

zephyrheaven, May 14, 6:02pm
man that would be cool

ryanm2, May 14, 6:05pm
If they burn couches and riot at the end, then its just another Undy 500.

fordcrzy, May 14, 6:13pm
i like the rule that says they can pull a car and crush it at any time!

fordcrzy, May 14, 6:14pm
# 4.4: BS Factor: To prevent cheating, all cars will be inspected by a panel appointed by the Organizers. At that time, all teams will be given an opportunity to describe the car's purchase and prep. If the panel believes the limit set out in Rule 4.1 has been exceeded, it will assign a Bullshit Factor (BSF) equal to one BSF per $10 above the limit. The entry will be docked one lap for each BSF assigned. (Ten dollars = one BSF = one lap.) Entrants are very, very, exceedingly strongly encouraged to bring pre-race-prep photographs, verifiable receipts, notarized testimonials, plus any and all other supporting evidence to Tech/BS Inspection. Or at least make up plausible-sounding stories in advance.

o 4.4.1: Appeal of BSF Panel Decisions: Get real. There's no appealing this decision. You're boned.

cummingsra1, May 14, 7:31pm
Hell yeah, I'd love to do this.

morrisman1, May 14, 8:52pm
How plausable would it be in NZ! Even the undie500 is becoming difficult for people to get cars, let alone to develop a race car under $500.

Hell it would be fun, getting an old banger to last 24 hours of racing is indeed an achievement. I think my first priority would be to not find the fastest car, but find one with a cooling system in good condition and up to the task!

julian.walls, May 14, 9:08pm
Sounds pretty good to me .although if you car was a classic or potential classic I would not like it to get crushed.the wrecker yards are doing very well in this country the price of scrap metal is high at present.

Personally SuperTourer racing - guys organized that lost the plot:)

yeahm8, May 14, 9:55pm
Plenty of heaps out there without having to use a good car considered a classic.be a lot of fun, especially if you have a team of drivers wanting to take turns.lol

kcf, May 15, 7:04am
Quite achievable here in NZ.

NB: it isn't actually a 24 hour race.

NB2: there's nothing to say that you can't keep racing your car, after they've destroyed it with the digger . one of the cars destroyed in fact kept racing. It just looked quite sorry for itself.

Couple of friends of mine run in these events in the US.Saab turbo of all the strange weapons of choice.

3tomany, May 15, 7:18am
cant do it in nz someone might hurt themselves and if that should happen who do we blame!

i-n-horz, May 15, 8:04am
Too right.plus we're wrapped up in so much ferk'n red tape we can hardly breathe.

rob_man, May 15, 8:17am
You'd probably need to raise the price to NZ$1000 for each car to make it work here.

3tomany, May 15, 9:40am
should be able to rock up to a track sighn a peice of paper that says said driver is a moron and nobody can stop said driver from being a moron and if you get hurt being a moron nobody else should be at fault. then go racing and have some fun

whqqsh, May 15, 2:24pm
many forms of racing start like this but they all end up dollar driven. Bucket racing started similar but got silly so they put a price cap on & guys were going out buying brand new RG50s in their mates or relatives name then 'buying' it off them for the limit amount.
HQ racing was the same then guys started 'stretching the rules' & finding odd parts that were fitted on some years only & buying them up so prices of parts rocketed making officials allow similar spec aftermarket parts. Then came the guys getting custom built race cars & ground up builds using tricks of the trade (one was to get the body acid dipped but leaving it in the juice over a long weekend causing a lighter body & by a surprising amount).
No matter what label, the competitive dollar advantages soon come into play, you'd be kidding yourself if you think you could buy an old HQ these days, strip her out, reco the motor & be competitive with even the tailmarkers

pollymay, May 15, 2:43pm
^ The thing is there is no singular market and it's for fun. Dirt track racing is dirt cheap piles with a cage in them. Sure some people go out and buy their kid a WRX with 400hp but no one cares about that guy because at the end of the day they are not having the fun as the guy in the 1300 starlet that is doorhandle to doorhandle with an old VL on 5 cylinders.

My $300 mr2 is STILL going after 8 years. Few different engines and gearboxes but the same suspension struts, arms and seats as the first day I climbed in it and have had a good 3 years out of the current $100 motor absolutely thrashing it. I once entered an old 80's FWD holden gemini in some jalopy races and was overtaking skylines, commodores, turbo gazzeles with all of 52kW (that was when it was new) because it was just so light and no one else could get traction. It was ridiculously funny until I hit the wall and almost rolled it.then it was hilarious.

fordcrzy, May 15, 3:50pm
remember the $500d does not include the safety gear and wheels/tyres. so if you had a $1000 limit you could buy a 1500-2000 dollar car and then sell parts off of it to get down to the dollar limit. you could easily sell off 500-1000 worth of parts off a car.wheels lights interior, electric windows, glass etc. even sell off good panels and do a part exchange for bent ones.or buy a $1000 car sell off the parts and then spend some dough on making it faster.

odie6, May 15, 5:16pm
In Sweden/Denmark they have a similar theme but for rally meets. The cars cant be worth more than $500 and if you get a place, (1st,2nd 3rd), you must sell your car for $500 to the first offer from lower placed drivers. This stops people spending any money on their cars. Havnt got a link, but I might go have a look.

Blame National.

austingtir, May 15, 5:59pm
National!Labour was in power when the majority of ridiculous legislation was brought in.

morrisman1, May 15, 6:07pm
National would make motorsport free and easy for corporate teams, then subsidise it by charging Joe Bloggs twice as much

blackcat17, May 15, 6:10pm
About 12 years ago we had a $100 challenge, we used to go and race on an car clubs Autocross track, I mean a really really rutted mean one. I got given a 1000c Fiat Uno and tore around in that, I remember pulling up once turning the thing off, went to start and it wouldn't go, opened the bonnet and the whole battery had been left behind on the track. You could start it using jumper leads and it would keep running so wasn't a problem. Eventually an exle pulled out of the gearbox. We lost a Mk3 Cortina when the front subframe came out. Rolled a Triumph 2500, but pushed it back on its wheels and it kept going. Also had a Celica, that was evil as all the shocks were had it. Best cars were mid 80s Mitsi Mirages, had two, they seemed to be indestructable, just soaked up the hits and kept going. Got all these for free or $100 or under, was a heap of fun.

rob_man, May 15, 6:15pm
It seems a bit on the nose that you could have your car taken for $500 after installing a full roll cage in it.
