Big end bearing?

shane191, May 8, 7:31pm
1996 subaru wrx, 2litre turbo, 160000ks. What are the symptoms of the big end bearing going! I have a noise for a few seconds just after it fires up. Seems to be only when its cold. thanks

How long ago was the oil changed! It certainly sounds like its starting to wear. Just a bit of a light knocking noise for a few seconds! Cold oil is thicker than hot oil. So it takes the oil pump longer to get pressure to the bearings.

its a suby and 160kms its ready to go bang anyday
n yeah turbos are hard on the bottom end thats why none turbo subs last much longer
id say start rebuilding another engine
and as above oil must be clean so change every 10k as oil gallerys are small and hard on cams

oil was changed about 4000ks ago, usually do it every 7500 ks,

Probably from the top end. On older engines the valvetrain will tend to make a bit of noise until the oil pressure comes up. Top end noise is more of a tapping while big ends is more of a knocking.

if you have a turbo subaru make sure you use a genuine subaru filter.
9/10 turbo subarus with failed bigends have non genuine filters on them

big ends make noises all the time when they are stuffed on load change. what destroyes bigends is low octane fuel like 91 pinking pr pinging it is called that noise is actuarly hammering the piston back before it reaches top dead center and destroyes the bigends over time. That is the main cause of bigend play on petrol engines that cant retard the timing enough to cope with 91 crap fuel.

The only sensible post in the thread so far

Don't these have a bit of piston slap until they warm up when getting up in ks!

mantagsi, May 11, 6:46pm
Damn, beat me to it. I would think this before anything else. IMHO if a big end bearing is gone, you are going to know about it hot or cold!

shane191, May 14, 9:23pm
Thanks for the replys, the kind of noise its making almost sounds like a belt slipping but they are all tight.
only run it on 96 fuel.
use aftermarket filters so will get some subaru filters.

Please show where you get your facts on this one!

Found out what the noise was today. Starter motor drive gear not returning quick enough. wee bit of grease on shaft and all fixed. noise gone.

It's the same with many brands of car. Cheap aftermarket filters like FRAM which don't have a good anti drainback valve. All the oil drops out of the system everytime it's off then every startup it has to fill the system again. Lots of the jap stuff uses denso or other quality brands that work well. Wix filters and such are good to.

On the other hand FRAM, Champion, Pennzoil and some other various cheapies will kill the bottom end fast. Fram = orange death caps, I've even seen cheap filters blow the paper filtering media. A good filter is a wise investment

End of the day you should pop back in here and do a promo plug fordamn decent honest GOOD mechanic.mate

Yes thats fine but the quote was that ONLY subaru filters should be used.
That is a load of rubbish , as you say there are many good filters out there.
Iv only ever used ryco on my subaru gtb and its at 180thou ks
