Tell me about Idler Pulley's?

blueaeroplane, May 12, 6:35am
Toyota Hi-Lux Double Cab Ute 2.8 Diesel 1995 300,000kms. Just got cam-belt changed, the old one wasn't in bad nick but the mechanic said the idler pulley's were munted.

What do they do! Do they (as they sound) take up the slack of the cam belt at idle.and how come the vehicle drove fine without them doing anything.then I use Dr Google and find out many Hi-lux and 'Cruiser drivers who do their own mechanics don't even worry about them.

TIA

They take up the slack in the cambelt all the time.By munted he probably means dry, i.e. the bearings in them have little lubrication left in them, eventually they will fail and result in failure of the cambelt, then the crank and cam will lose timing with each other and pistons will meet valves, causing major engine damage.

Always replace idler pulleys when i do a cambelt job for customers here. Hell if you dont they have to last another 80 to 100k before the next c/belt change and not worth the risk. Not worth the $55.00 for a Toyota idler to squabble about.

One of them is the tensioner , and the one with teeth is the idler .Not actually that expensive ,but can be if you dont change them and the bearings inside them fail. You dont wont a belt breaking on this engine.

Thanks for that, yes no evidence that a cam-belt had EVER been changed - I bought a Gates kit from ebay for the truck I think it was A$205.00, another A$100 for the water pump, $580 for labour, money well spent for peace of mind!

Toyota genuine parts are cheaper then what you paid! And I wouldn't trust the gates belt to last the 100000kms that the Genuine would

unbeatabull, May 12, 9:26am
Genuine Toyota parts are stupidly cheap, and even Dayco and Gates kits from places like BNT would of been cheaper then that!

Though, I have never had a problem with either Gates or Dayco belts not lasting the required service schedule.

I've seen gates belts give up round the 80k-90k mark on Toyota 2L and 3L engines. big price to pay for a few cents difference when the belt is only $55+gst retail.

That made me think - okay I actually paid (now I've checked) $131.85 for the Belt, Tensioner Pulley, Idler Pulley, two seals and then $14.40 for courier post from Brisbane to country NSW - is that really that bad a deal! Didn't occur to me to even look at Toyota genuine parts. Now I'm depressed.

scoobeey, May 12, 11:24am
yip you should have got genuine .Ive just done a full cbelt change on 2c toyotaand supercheap and ripco where WAY dearer!

thunderbolt, May 12, 1:13pm
Does Toyota make the genuine belt themselves!
Or does one of the big names already mentioned make it for them!
P.s it's the second one.

brokebloke1, May 12, 1:23pm
id say that one of the big companys ( gates etc.) makes all the belts for all the major car makers around the world

gadgit3, May 12, 3:26pm
Really! I'd like to see the proof of that one. I can show you a Gates belt and a Toyota genuine one and I bet even you could see at least two differences between the two.

a.woodrow, May 12, 4:04pm
Doesn't denso make toyota belts!

brokebloke1, May 12, 7:27pm
yes and they make belts for ford I have one on our Falcon

treachug, May 12, 8:33pm
Dont get too depressed - dont think anyones picked up you live over the ditch - you may find that (as you bought the parts in aussie & got delivered to same) Toyota aussie may have a differing parts price structure to Nz & not be as proactive in parts pricing therefore the price you paid may have been cheaper than genuine parts pricing.

"tell me about idler pulleys"

well they are a $10 bearing tensioned with a $5 spring mounted on a $20 casting .
