I think dot 3 boils faster than dot 4 or 5 but why can you only use dot 3 in some cars thinking dot 3 is lest desirable and others only dot 4 etc
a.woodrow,

I believe it depends on the seals used in the brake hydraulic system

also viscosity bt the way DOT stands for department Of Transport spec

A wide range of answers. In general silicon fluid will be problematic in older vehicles and is not a great performer over all. There is also the question of dry boiling point (for those who get serious about stopping from speed) Race Brakes NZ have a good write up on their website explaining the various fluids, their properties and what is recommended.

Dot 4 and Dot 5.1 (not to be confused with Dot 5) supersede Dot 3. Your car will say Dot 3 because Dot 4 (and 5.1) wouldn't have been produced at that time. You can use Dot 4 and 5.1 in place of Dot 3.

Yes^. Some systems require Dot 3 only. Castrol Response Dot 4 can be used in all Dot 3 applications and most Dot 4 applications.
The 'superseding' thinking is simpleton thinking.

why would Castrol make a product called Dot 4 if it can't be used in all Dot 4 applications but can be used in all Dot 3 applications! Dot 4 meets and exceeds the Dot 3 specifications and can't imagine there being any negative consequences of using Dot 4 in a Dot 3 applications.

It's Castrol Response Dot 4 and there's something in some Dot 4 fluids that can perish/swell the seals in Dot 3 Only masters/slaves.
You can still buy brand new Dot 3 Only clutch masters.
Castrol also make Castrol Response Super Dot 4 for '95 and later Dot 4 applications.

Rubbish. DOT4 is entirely backwards compatible.

You don't know what you're talking about again. Talk about backwards compatible.

This just in: bellky knows better than the manufacturers of the brake fluids.
Yeah, right.

No idea.
Edit to say you have some idea - but not enough.

Toyota had a large recall last year on early model Highlander brake master cylinders and it all came back to wrong type (Dot) of fluid used in brake fluid changes causing swelling of the seals. and what Bellky is saying is correct for this model.
tonyrockyhorror,
May 12, 2:27pm
I have much more idea than you.
tonyrockyhorror,
May 12, 2:34pm
They recalled because the material was incompatible with anything except 'genuine' Toyota fluid which has added polymers. It was simply poor material selection for the seal, nothing to do with the DOT rating of the fluid.
bellky,
May 12, 2:35pm
No you don't.

Yeah, I do. Ten fold.
