Why Are Bulbs So Hard To Get At?

paulap, May 9, 7:15am
My car loves chewing through headlight bulbs. Yeah I know, time to get looking into why it is doing it.

But why do they have to be such a pain in the proverbial to change! I have small hands but are still a mission.

There's always a bit of a trade-off between ease of assembly at the factory and serviceability. For a while there most Japanese cars were astoundingly serviceable (Euros not so much) but it must have become too much trouble to maintain the courtesy. Things like bulbs should be the simplest of dispensibles to change without the risk of breaking stuff.

I used to be able to do all this sort of stuff myself but with this car it is not so easy. But will give it a go.

I used to have a Holden Cruze (Suzy Ignis) and the only way we could change therear bulbs easily was to either put it on a hoist or jack it up real high.

If they're hard to get at to change, perhaps the reason that you're chewing though them might be related to getting a smear or fingerprint on them when you're fiddling around fitting them. That will reduce the service life of halogen headlamp bulbs considerably.

I make sure I don't touch the bulb. Learnt that one a long time ago.

Got the man to do them last time but I finally managed to do them myself just now. Back of my hand is looking a bit worse for wear being stuffed into a small gap but all done and working.

Paulap- what you are sayingrings pretty loud alarm bells in my head.
Cars don't "chew through" headlight bulbs normally.
Now if its a case of -Ohh one blewthen another blew etc-working through the up to 6 bulbs one by one then hey -brown smelly stuff happens.
BUT if you keep blowing the same bulbs over and over then summat ain't right.Either theres moisture dropping onto the bulb from inside the headlight, the bulb isn't correctly mounted or the regulator in the alternator is on the fritz and the bulbs are the point of least resistance.

It is due to go in for some work soon so will get the guys to check it out. Thanks.

I assume it was the r/h next to the battery! easiest way to gain access is to remove the battery.

on the toyota aurion you have to remove bumper and headlight to change the parklight bulb.

All I had was a screwdriver so battery removal was a hassle lol

Which is a reminder to me to hurry up and refill my toolbox.
