I just sold my car on Trade Me and after dealing with scammers, racists and generally mean people in the last week I'm left shattered by the whole experience. I ended up selling the car for much less than the asking price because it was so stressful I just wanted it gone. People are using bullying tactics to get a good price, Trade Me should do something about it. Won't be selling any more vehicles here again.

tgray, Apr 3, 4:43am
That's a shame.
I have sold over 1000 cars on here and 99% have been pleasant experiences.
I put 'NO OFFERS' on my ads, which I find makes the whole thing much easier.
I hope you didn't let it go to cheap!

madeley, Apr 3, 4:48am
I sold a car recently and didn't have any bad experiences.Worst part was probably feeling a little isolated negotiating on my own (female) with two negotiation savvy quick-talking guyslol.Yeah I sold too cheap as well only on day 2 of listing.I'm afraid to say i doubt TMe could do anything about that and these people you describe aren't unique to TMe only.

74nova, Apr 3, 4:55am
All you have to do is say NO, and stick to your own price you want for the car. no bodies fault but your own.

howie69, Apr 3, 5:05am
Sorry to hear of your bad experience. I have bought and sold many cars over the years on trade me and have been pretty happy with the results. Yes sold some cheaper than I would have liked but in the end it is a buyers market and you have to meet market prices. I have also met some really nice people, and been hassled in one instance by a scammer but TM dealt quickly and promptly with that !

mugenb20b, Apr 3, 5:08am
Sorry to hear that, but there's a way to deal with halfwits and tyre kickers. I actually enjoyed dealing with such people by the way. Read them the right act.but politely.

motorboy2011, Apr 3, 5:14am
so your problem is with people, not trademe. thats not tradmes problem, nor is the fact that you let people take advantage of you.

jason18, Apr 3, 6:35am
Yeah trademe has nothing to do with it. Just get some confidence up and take control of the situation. At the end of the day its your car! Gotta play hardball when selling especially private.

socram, Apr 3, 7:08am
Agree with above posts. If you are not confident, (applies to buying or selling cars) get a buddy along who is.

rovercitroen, Apr 3, 7:14am
I must have been lucky. I have bought and sold a few cars on TM over the years and have dealt with fantastic honest people. I have even made a couple of friends through buying and selling at different times.

noswalg, Apr 3, 7:41am
I have sold quite a few cars using TM over the years and I am always left feeling traumatized afterwards but it's only due to the fees, the last guy that tried to beat me down on the price ended up paying $50 more than what we had agreed to over the phone, mind you it was just a $250 scrap car, the indian chap ended up paying $300 for it after turning up,informing me that he was only paying me $150 for it as he was trying to winch it on to his truck. Lets just say we went back to the negotiating table!

Something tells me this isn't the only issue you're going to have in life.

jklo, Apr 3, 8:08am
The biggest problem with buying off trade me is that people think their jap import car is worth the same as when they bought it off the car lot 10 years ago.

bitsy_boffin, Apr 3, 9:10am
Ullo ullo ullo, what's all this then.

The phrase you are looking for is "read them the RIOT act".It comes from an old law in Britain which provided means to disperse gatherings of people (riots), it required the copper to literally read a proclamation to the group.

And, don't forget to blow on the pie.

jason18, Apr 3, 10:18am
Being racist and all I have had problems with indians/somalians agreeing on prices then getting there and trying to offer less when he comes back to buy car. Tell em to get bent.

bellky, Apr 3, 10:22am
Something tells me you have a few issues yourself.

mugenb20b, Apr 3, 10:26am
Thank you for pointing out the mistake I made.

No, he was referring to the right (as in correct) Act, said Act being the Roadside Vehicle Sales Negotiation Act, 1978.

krisbop, Apr 3, 10:38am
from a buyers point of view. its not easy either, people not getting back to you, saying things like have done a full service and replaced cambelt. when car doesn't even have a campbelt! makes me wonder if half the people on here even want to sell when they wont reply to you and dont list a contact number. im totaly over it to i dont ever want to buy a car again haha

johnf_456, Apr 3, 10:39am
"right act"

bellky, Apr 3, 10:39am
