About a zillion dollars worth of hassle and grief in implementing a new law.

It's amazing that people get so bothered by a skid.

I agree priorities need to be addressed. Why do we have Police wasting time with this nonsense. All this when they don't have the resources to recover stolen property when they are advised of its location, they can't arrive in timely fashion to pick up wanted criminals and they refuse to assist in cases of attempted kidnapping.
These are fundamental Police duties and need to be tended to long before they waste time on someone doing some skids. Not to mention the legal and finance nightmares that affect us all once you start crushing peoples cars.
I also don't like the vague wording of "unnecessary display of speed" and "sustained loss of traction" this potentially opens people up to bullying by Police.

It's amazing that "sating public desire for vengeance" is so often poorly implemented in our justice system, yet politicians know it's potentially good for their popularity, and it keeps talkback radio hacks in jobs.

It means whatever the police want it to mean, including a hanging offense. Any offense should not depend simply on a policeman's viewpoint.
Would like to see such open-ended charges properly contested in court.

There is nothing to stop the vehicle owner contesting the matter in court. Just needs to be prepared to pay costs, particularly if he loses.

-- 'properly' contested, ie. using a good, high-powered lawyer, not one working out the boot of his car in the car park.

Another toothless law which has probably cost the tax payers millions. How many cars have actually been crushed under this "new" legislation!F all if any.If they wanted it to have an impact they should have made an example of the first 20 or 30 cars. All the politicians have done is set themselves up for another Tui ad."Be careful or you'll get your car crushed.Yeah Right".
