He guys and hoping you can help. We have a 1999 Honda Odyssey, 2.3 Vtec. Done just over 183K so will be looking at a cambelt, etc job. Can you advise whats require and approx. cost! Thanks, Ian.

thunderbolt, Apr 4, 8:04pm
Belt, tensioner, seals and water pump.
I would allow $600.

ianalice1, Apr 4, 8:09pm
Sounds better. I email Honda, a while back and they quoted about $1200:( With waterpump, do they put a kit in it or a replacement!

cassandra13, Apr 4, 9:30pm
buy after market stuff and dont do it through honda. go to a decent normal garage that you dont need a gold card for

mugenb20b, Apr 5, 5:22am
Everything gets replaced. Modern water pumps are sealed units.

gadgit3, Apr 5, 5:28am
Not going to buy yourself much labour with that price!

skin1235, Apr 5, 5:45am
honda odessy recommend 120k km changes, may not be due til at least 240k km Ian, another 60k km = 3 to 4 yrs yet

gadgit3, Apr 5, 6:01am
Unless it's had a aftermarket belt fitted at the 120km change. I wouldn't trust those gates belts for longer then 90000kms. Seen a few give up at 90k on Hiluxs

thunderbolt, Apr 5, 6:33am
Gagit, There is a pretty good chance the OEM belt is made by Gates, to exactly the same specs as the aftermarket version sold through local resellers.

poppajn, Apr 5, 6:53am
Mine was about $850 with 2 1/2 hours labour, everything done.

skin1235, Apr 5, 6:54am
how would you be sure to be safe, Hilux intervals range from 100k km on the 2L to 150k km on the KD, and even further on some of the later models, they do all indicate at least a max of 60 months regardless,so but every 5 yrs flick a new one in there

gadgit3, Apr 5, 7:03am
How would I be sure. Use genuine belt.

skin1235, Apr 5, 7:09am
the point I'm trying to make is that Ians issue is on a Honda, and that model indicates a 120k change interval
to comment re hilux ( Toyota) or any other vehicle, which may or may not have similar intervals, is simply wasting space and oxy, especially when Toyota have such widely varying intervals for their different engines - anywhere from 80k to 200k depending on which motor it is for
Ians Honda is recommended for 120k, and would be on it's second belt already, not due again until 240k, another 3 to 4 yrs away at least

pandai, Apr 5, 7:24am
Honda cambelts have a recommended max lifespan of 6 years

gadgit3, Apr 5, 7:50am
Nah ya missed my point a bit. The Hiluxs I was refering to had an intervil of 10years or 100000kms and after a after market belt was fitted they only made it to 90k and if you read the gates belt pack on some of it's product it only recomends 80k
So my point is the Honda belt is a better option as it has a knowen intervial. if it's first belt change has been done with an aftermarket belt the 120k intervil may not still apply

thunderbolt, Apr 5, 8:07am
Gates recommends 80Km if the OEM does not specify any other change interval.
Some are even less, the DAEWOO sourced Viva for example is 60km, but the change interval is based on the tensioners lifespan, not the belt.

Gates aftermaket policy is to supply the exact same belt as the OEM and to recommend replacement based on OEM suggested intervals.
In fact, they base their warranty on the OEM replacement timeframe.

From memory you live in Papamoa,
There is an excellent Garage called "The Garage" at Papamoa who do a proper job for very reasonable cost if you are wondering where to take it.

In terms of when it should be replaced, personally, even if it hasn't reached its km limit I always replace belts at least every 5 years (sooner for some cars, and obviously at the km limit if that comes first). That includes cars that technically have a 10 year interval. Aside from the compounds the belt are made from breaking down over time its cheap insurance to replace your waterpump and tensioners at that interval anyway.

Also. the theoretical longer intervals don't take into account what might happen if you have a seal thats leaking oil onto the belt which will cause premature failure. It just makes sense for so many reasons to get in there and see whats going on at least every 5 years.

gadgit3, Apr 5, 8:57am
Thats your take on them. My opnion based on vehicles I have worked on. I wouldn't trust a Gates cambelt to run to OEM replacment times.

thunderbolt, Apr 5, 9:25am
To be clear, we are talking about Gates Timing belts sold in NZ by a Gates Authorised distributor who will supply you the correct belt (size, compound, construction) for the vehicle specified.
Thats why Gates belts are always sold by application detail, rather than tooth count, tooth profile and belt width.
These belts will be excactly the same as the OEM offering.
There have however been times when non Gates affiliated resellers have purchased a belt that matches up dimensionally (but not same construction or materials) and resold those into the NZ market.
These resellers have also sold Gates branded belts made under the Unitta Asia brand which are constucted in Neoprene for the Jap domestc market with a much shorter lifespan than the OEM exact belt.

mugenb20b, Apr 5, 10:31am
Did something else fail that caused the belt to fail "early"! Like, did a tensioner or idler bearing seize!

gadgit3, Apr 5, 11:13am
Nope all bearings in good working order. Belt snaped. We didn't fit the belts so I can't comment on the tension they had be set to but in 13 years I have seen 3 Gates belts fail well before there time and I work in a small town so on a bigger scale who knows.
Just my personal experence and putting it out there. I also don't like using Gates drive belts as I feel they need adjusting twice as much as genuine in there life time and there life time is shorter then genuine.

gadgit3, Apr 5, 11:22am
Sorry mr Gates but I do not know how to answer your question. As I was just the repairer of the failed belts and can only go off the Gates belt change sticker and the brand name and logo on the broken belt.

thunderbolt, Apr 5, 11:55am
Mr Gates, wouldn't that be nice.
I could buy Trevor from Te Kawhata with my spare change.

Not Mr Gates however, just passing on what I have learnt in my years in the trade.

gadgit3, Apr 5, 12:00pm
Same here just passing on.

ianalice1, Apr 5, 2:28pm
Hi Alex. Yep Papamoa. I see if I can sus out the"The Garage". Rest of the talk, on this, has gone way over my head. Thanks for your common sense input. Others talking to "experts". Ian
Just spoke to Brent at "The Garage". Sounds like a nice guy. Said they have done heaps. He only uses genuine Honda parts and for full service, $1200. Gulp! Ian
