Was using it today and was wondering to myself how does is work. It brakes but dosent use brakes so I asume engine braking but its quite forcefull. I guess theres a few systems but I really have no idea how they do it. And man does it nail it when a ya climb a hill lol.

old cruise control is just basically a speed sense and vacuum actuator and some crude software and electronics. Cruise control tied in with traction control and or other systems will utilise these systems i.e traction control, esp ect will activate breaks and or emergency breaking suspension and torque. Also n.b fly by wire requires no actuator

Depends on the car, but most don't actually brake. They'll just come off the gas. Pain in NZ, cos every mongrel travelling 20km/h under the limit refuses to get out of the fast lane. Edit: Poster 2 has a point - some of the newer systems will brake.

I had cruise control in my old BMW but I'm a bit old fashioned and chose not to use it.

We have an ASX and that brakes going down hills, pretty unnerving at first but you get used to it, it's more economical than driving manually on a trip, been right down to 4.7 litres per 100 km's, oops and its a six speed diesel

I reckon on nice open roads with few hills etc its great but its forever correcting the speed due to small dips etc. Bit sensative I reckon, and it knocks if down to gears and floors it when climbing a hill. You can deffinatly drive smoother without it on.

That's the cruise control fitted by the car maker. I find Kiwi cruise control consists of locking the ankle on the gas pedal so that 80 kph on the flat goes down to 50 going uphill and 120 going downhill and stays at 80 even if the speed limit is 100, 90, 80, 50 or 30! Lol!
