what does it mean when the little red stick on the rev counter is not sitting on 0 when the car is turned off!

That is an indication that the rev counter has been taken past red line and the engine has been over reved. The engine will self destruct in 9.8.7.

It doesn't mean anything major, just means the rev counter is faulty. Fixing it could be something as simple as a 5 minute job such as straightening a bent/stuck needle thats dragging on the clock face a la Nissan Navara / Terrano, or a replacement tacho driver module. To be honest if it is an old car, and especially if it is an auto, or you can drive a manual and shift according to engine sound, don't worry about it

dont worry about it. if its a fuel injected car then itll have a rev limiter any way, and if you are a good driver you can tell when to change anyway. i think boost gauges and rev counters should be replaced by an over boost light and maybe a shift light
