rob_man, Jul 3, 8:09am
I run 40 psi on my landcruiser for road use, probably a similar application.

intrade, Jul 3, 8:10am
yup be about the same as for a landquizzer

amyc000, Jul 3, 8:19am
Thanks guys - I appreciate it!If I can give you any advice on cooking the perfect cake, how to fold towels or how to make your girlfriend "happy" let me know. Haha Thanks!

thejazzpianoma, Jul 3, 8:43am
Pretty sure the outlander is more like 30 PSI front 29 Rear. I really wish rob_man would engage brain before giving advice to someone who won't know its incorrect.
OP, if in doubt 30 PSI won't do any harm for the moment, and give any Mitsubishi dealer a call when you get a second if you don't have an official manual. 40 PSI will be way over the top, and possibly affect handling and braking in an adverse way.
Oh and Top marks for checking the tire pressures before a trip, you are a lot more on to it than you give yourself credit for.

BTW, if you see this and your teenager has already gone, don't panic the over inflation will not likely be life and death but its worth texting them to adjust it at the next gas station.

Could always check the sticker inside the drivers door jamb for a hint!.

thunderbolt, Jul 3, 9:22am
Over on the Mitsubishi forum they suggest 32 - 35 psi when cold.

mrfxit, Jul 3, 9:52am
Depends on what size tyres.
My 31/10.5/15's are happy at 38psi all round.
Any less & they rip the shoulders of & any more & they strip the center.

mrfxit, Jul 3, 9:53am
Regardless of tyre, it's a 4x4 (altho a smallish 1) & won't have any problems for at least the short term running 35psi all round.

iman007, Jul 3, 10:35am
if you wern't in whangas, id pop round and pump em up for ya :)

amyc000, Jul 3, 10:52am
Holy crap. I just read the rest of the comments, I already told him 40. what should I do!He has probably done it already .

amyc000, Jul 3, 10:53am
Aww arent you just the sweetest!

amyc000, Jul 3, 10:57am
Thanks, I just did that!Well thats the last time I take the first bit of advice I read on here! Jeez I seriously need to do a car fixit class!

amyc000, Jul 3, 11:00am
Thanks mate!

rob_man, Jul 3, 11:14am
I wouldn't panic, there has been a bit of over reaction to my telling you what I run my tyres at. If 40 is more than recommended it won't cause any problems other than a slightly harder ride. I have been running mine at 40 for years after finding that the best all-round for economy and wear.

amyc000, Jul 3, 11:19am
Okay cool, thanks, I just freaked out when someone said it would affect braking.thats my boy driving and hes a scary teenage boy driver as it is without the car causing more problems!

What you did texting was a good idea. Like I said it will affect handling and braking but not enough to get into a flap about.

The 29/30 PSI suggestion I made was based on the previous version Outlander as I didn't have any figures for the new one.

What was concerning me is that if your Husband had been running the car at the recommended 30 PSI and then you put the tires up 30% tighter the difference would be quite noticeable to a teenager pushing the car to its limits without supervision, and he could get a fright.

BUT don't panic about it, you did the right thing warning him with the text and getting him to change them at the next gas station. The weather is also good which will mean the change will be more forgiving.

Basically tighter tires mean less tire is in contact with the road and it also gives the effect of having tighter suspension which will tend to show itself first under heavy cornering with a poor road surface and/or on wet roads.

Tighter than recommended tires are great for economy but you need to be aware of the different handling characteristics that go with them.

Anyone who has driven a car with no power steering and bumped up the tire pressures 5 PSI will know just how much difference that makes. Thankfully the outlander has a bit of weight to it, nice wide tyres and modern safety/suspension systems so these will lesson the safety risks.

Again, you have done the right thing, your son is now aware of the situation and to watch for it until the inflation is changed. No need to panic at all.

Oh dear! Some of us are quite low maintenance so maybe if its not working for you then its time to either a. get a new girlfriend thats not so needy or b. make sure that your 'equipment' is in good working order and that your 'skills' are up to date! Then maybe that day will come!Good luck.

amyc000, Jul 3, 12:06pm
Yes thank you for that,He had already taken the car to pick up his friends so it was not here for me to look at. He was filling up with gas and I was going to let him know the psi by then. But thank you yes I know now for the future.
