Jet engines

has anyone built one. was thinking of building one. For a laugh cause i can

Rolls Royce has build a couple.I looked into it but with lack of some engineering equipment it would have cost more than I could spare at the time. Simple machines but at the same time quite complex. I supplied some parts to a guy building one yesterday and hes got my number so when it goes he will hopefully ring me.

I have a good book on my shelf here, called the jet engine from rolls royce and there is heaps of information in it that you can apply the same concept to a turbocharger based jet engine. On the net somewhere there is a calculator to help you get the holes for the combustion chamber spaced and sized correctly to contain the flame in the right place and allow for cooling air to get through to the turbine.

I heard years ago there was an old guy in Auckland who used to make them.He would use old turbo compressors and parts etc. From memory I was told he was a university professor or something along those lines,my old flatmate had met him.Plenty of pulse rocket powered stuff around but a jet engine would be cool.

theres a club for model jet aircraft that have flight days, get hold of those guys

you can make them out of an old turbo, start it with a leaf bower. they wont actually propel a hell of a lot though, just a bit of noise and flame show

One thing that a jet engine isn't is cool!

Pulse jet engines are pretty easy to make.Depends on what you mean by a jet engine. There are quite a few types, if you're going to start with one, start with a pulse jet

youtube is your friend, plenty of them on there

l built a Pulse jet years ago . l have some plans in a book

One thing to be aware of is be careful, you can make some signifigant fireballs if you do it wrong.

Dont ask how i know :P

My mate has one runs on lpg and diesel its pretty loud has an afterburner as well.
was just looking to see if any body has built one that can offer me some do's and donts or tips. I seen videos ect. Just want to build one to say i can. maybe fit it to a go kart

I have a kuzzy is ex airforce and was a skyhawk techy and he rekons you can make a simple jet with a vacuum cleaner, make one hellova cleaner huh, cats and all !

lol. a guy i worked with built a miniature one using a turbo etc. was awesome when it ran, and he figured it would have enough grunt to propel a go-kart, scooter, etc

agreed:
turbofan jet engine
turboprop jet engine
turboshaft jet engine
ramjet
pulsejet

top 3 very similar. for homebuilt i ams sure the OP is referring to either a turbojet or pulse jet.

complexity of building a turbo jet is a lot more than a pulse jet, but also depends on how you make it. as mentioned it can be made from old turbo's.

OP- if you want to build a proper turbojet, there are kits you can buy(mainly for model A/C).
if you want to build something that makes a lot of noise and some flame, build a pulsejet. simple too.

and post picks when you do!
