someone buying your vehicle to register as the new owner before letting them take it!
Had a cash offer for my car recently and the person wanted to change ownership on line and take the car straight away. If they had a receipt to show they had registered as the new owner then that would not have been a problem. However I wasn't prepared to let them take it without proof they were registered as the new owner.

Very wise. Isnt it also what NZTA suggest!

Hi shelleigh, I wont let any one take possession of a vehicle I own until the title has been changed in to their name. Whether they do it online at your house or whether you go down to the post office with them. Either way as long as its done before they take the car. So yes, you are wise.

Shelleigh--My rule is simple --no c of ono vehicle -not negotiable

Absolutely not unreasonable. It's the prudent path.

Thank you guys - I felt a bit mean not letting the person take the vehicle but I just was not comfortable with them taking it when the paperwork wasn't done. So I have edited my auction to make it clear that this has to be done before they get the vehicle.

Depends. Well if the buyer has already deposited the cash into your account. And it is a Sunday, maybe you can be flexible.

Mone they were going to withdraw the cash from an ATM as it was after the banks had closed. However there was no way I was asking someone I'd just met to come to my home to change the ownership on line.

do it online at your house, you obviously have a computer and internet access. procedure only takes 5 mins, and you know they are doing it as you are both there. simple. If they wanted to take the car and do it themself later then obviously that is a different story

I dont think there are any circumstances where I would let anyone take a vehicle with out it being changed over. Not even the one you have outlined above.

Hopie w hile I am generally a trusting person, I also possess enough common sense to not invite someone I have just met to my home.

On more than one occassion I have just followed or driven down to the post office with them and made sure it was changed over while I was there with them.
shelleigh,

Fishy I would have done that but the post office was closed and they were from out of town so just passing through.

Strictly speaking, the title to the vehicle changes when the money changes hands. The change of registered owner doesnt affect this.

tell the cops that when you start getting your tickets.

And of course the change of registered owner is purely for NZTA purposes, which includes parking tickets.
My point related to the use of the term title.

Weeell yes an no. The registered owner of the vehicle should be the person "entitled to be in possession" of the vehicle and are therefore liable for fees and fines. The person entitled to be in possession is pretty much always the person who has just plonked down the cash. SO at the point they pay, they are entitled to be in possession, and are liable for fess and fines, so should be doing the change of ownership at that point. You can't really say the two things are no related.
As outlined above, let a car go from your sight without the change being dowe, at your own peril. There are regular threads on here from people who have done just that and are now in strife.

Really! You collect your mail from the post office! You do all your own building, electrical, plumbing! You phone in your metre reading! There's being careful, and then there's paranoia.

Absolutely, Stupid pico

Why of course I do Smac - it's called multi tasking lol
Edited to add I hope you are joking about paranoia. I just think inviting someone you don't know in to your home is showing a lack of common sense.

When I recently sold a car i just took the laptop outside and got them to do it online they said they didnt have a credit card or $9.20 or whatever it costs but paid for it myself much less hassle

Correct. It just struck me the other posters use of the term "title" when referring to the registered owner. There is a strong correlation between the two, but they are distinct to each other.

Nice. The word you are looking for is pedantic, not stupid.
