Seems like your the sound expert on here. Hopefully you can save me hours googling again :)

New JVC head unit in 2003 toyota caldina. All hooked up and working, but we werent too sure about the one orange illuminator cable coming out of the new head unit.

Any ideas where it goesor how to test for it!
(I think its why the day/night colour settings dont change on the head unit) From memory, I think the car has a spare blue, green, and another cable that we didnt touch/connect.

Hey mate. I'm no expert lol
Grab a multimeter or test light and turn your headlights on, test the spare wires you have for power (it will be a wire within the factory stereo loom). Once you find a wire with power turn the lights off. if that wire loses power that's the wire you need to connect onto your Illumination wire (Orange).
I never advice what coloured wire to connect to because sometimes the factory doesn't use the correct coloured wire - even if I know the colours, I still always test them.
Hope that helps :)

Perfect. I think I can do that or atleast my auto-techie mate lol.

Definitely better safe than sorry.

I shall do it when my space fillers arrive :)

Cheers

No worries at all mate!
Yeah, there isn't much point taking it back out just to connect that wire, may as well wait and kill 2 birds with one stone
One thing I found from customer feedback is it may not be best to connect Illumination if you regularly drive with your headlights on during the day - the dimmed display lights can make it quite hard to see.
