Where in NZ can you get a flywheel manufactured for a SR20VE (front wheel drive, 215mm clutch). Im trying to find one off a sr16ve but havnt had any luck yet.
Im after something in the area of 10-13 pounds if I go custom or aftermarket.
Has anyone had experience with alloy flywheels with a steel friction surface and how well they last!

Do you want to put a new ring gear on it or something!

nah, looking at what it would cost to make one from scratch.
looks nice sr2, what did that cost to get made! It looks pretty light

Your engines going ahhhh now thats better.

From memory it was around $600, we ran a 7 1/4" twin plate Tilton clutch and yes it was very light. It was attached to a hybrid, stroked Evo motor converted to run a V161 Geartrag box in a north / south RWD setup. With the balance shaft removed from the motor and the light flywheel I was surprised that it could still idle comfortably at 8 ??

$600 sounds pretty reasonable but unfortunately I dont want to risk dumping a heap into a flywheel then finding that we cannot afford to put suspension in or something like that. Im trying to limit the flywheel budget to under $300, hence why I am after a sr16ve one as my first option

IMO Money is better spent on another car. I realize this may be the new car and all and ideas about upgrades sing fresh in your mind but whats the point in spending $300 on upgrading a part that's only going to see you 1-2hp at the engine. Thats over $150 per hp dude. Get a subaru if you want something easy to upgrade

Now imagine that in a MX5

It wont give me any more horsepower at the engine, or even on the moon. Its about freeing up the power in the lower gears, where we will be doing a fair bit of work with this car. Less mass resisting the engine revving means more gets to the road and better acceleration.
Wanna stay N/A to keep it simple and cheap and in a class where we arent racing against 500hp silvias.

So you've already got a flywheel then, just want it lighter! Take it to turn tru and see what the can do with it, I've heard they do a bit of that sort of thing

For the increased throttle response, it's well worth it (imo) I've got a light weight flywheel behind my RB and it made a noticeable difference. money well spent - if it's in the budget

I dont have a flywheel at all currently, the engine we are getting had a CVT on it so only had a flexi plate, I guess thats ultra light!
Getting one machined is not an option for me, not after seeing pictures of what a shattered flywheel will do to a car, and potentially its occupants

your getting close morrie, the next flywheel in the lada will be based on ! yep, a flex plate.

Even at $600 that's cheap performance for a motokhana car. Nothing else gives that kinda response to low speed acceleration.

I bought a Giken chrome moly flywheel and twin plate clutch on here a couple of years ago. Cost including freight was less than $100. scrapped the clutch, machined the flywheel, put on car. Be sure that your flywheel is steel and not cast iron if you go the turned down method. Or make a small chrome moly wheel to go on top of your flex plate and fit a 100mm carbon F1 clutch for the ultimate in light weight setups.

of course you must compare the weight of the car against the weight of the flywheel and wonder if and hour spent with a holesaw and disc grinder inside would have a greater cost/effect ratio than spending money getting a flywheel made and balanced
Please do not even consider trying to lighten a flywheel with a hole saw and angle grinder!

used to machine &/or lighten quite a few years ago (for Schofields, Continental Cars, local MG mechanic etc etc) & have made a few, just need a half decent lathe
Yeah, but he will need it for all the power he has.
