Radioactive air filters, a health warning

i'm seriously thinking about buying a geiger counter, not just for cars, but for fishing as well

gammelvind, Jun 3, 5:55pm
Second that, love going in there are stirring, the fishing in there is excellent!

johnf_456, Jun 3, 5:58pm
Sure is fun fishing their, very feral

thejazzpianoma, Jun 3, 6:52pm
There's an app for that.
Nah seriously you can buy a fairly cost effective adapter for an iphone. How accurate it is I do not know though.
The big seller in Japan at the moment though is a new phone that has a Geiger counter built in.

You might find this map of the spread ofradioactive sea water interesting.

I notice the cabin/pollen filters in our recent shipments of cars from Japan have been looked at, as they are mostly not reinstalled properly.
I would trust MAF and the NZ govt to be looking into all potential areas of risk.

Oh and before someone says about it, no as far as I am aware border checks will not pick up on this issue. Two reasons for that:

1. As far as I know they are not testing the air filters

This link is also good reading.

I would have agreed that the common way to detect these particles was with a Geiger counter. This can be done on the Interior, exterior, airfilter or any part of a car that would be likely to accumulate particles.

Russia is like Canada, no problem registering RHD cars, some parts of Russia actually have far more RHD cars than LHD too.

That said, Japan has a fair number of LHD cars for export anyway. (Mostly European luxury and performance models)

Good to see they are at least looking at cabin and pollen filters, we don't know for sure they have been removed to test for radiation or whether they are just looking for fruit fly's, bugs etc though.

I wouldn't trust the Govt or MAF to be looking into all area's of risk properly at all. We regularly have massive and catastrophic bio-security failures (veroa bee mite, PSA, QLD fruit fly etc etc). Many of our Government departments are just a bungling mess without a clue, the masses just get suckered into thinking the opposite because their only exposure is through cleverly orchestrated propoganda, like Police 10/7 and Border Security programs. Which are just utter nonsense and no reflection of the true reality of those governement departments.

martin11, Jun 4, 6:12am
Where did you get that idea from ! Sounds like a dream

thejazzpianoma, Jun 4, 6:12am
This link is just utter nonsense.
For starters they are even trying to deny that people were initially mislead over the scale of the Fukishima disaster. That's well proven, even Miciho Kakuwho is usually very diplomatic has directly labled what we were told as lies. Michio would know being a leading Physicist and all. (You can easily google interviews on that subject)

Secondly they are trying to infer that most areas of Japan have just normal levels of background radiation. Again absolute utter nonsense. Their are plenty of live radiation maps showing most of Japan is well contaminated.

Even worse this guy tries to use the number of hits a subject has on google as "evidence"

I get the impression you did a desperate google search trying to find anyone who disputed these claims and this was all you could find. If that's the best counter argument you have got its even more reason to be really worried.

The guy has absolutely zero understanding of even basic statistics or anything, these no "good reading" about it, just completely baseless stupidity and nonsense. Luckily anyone with a bit of common sense and any idea at all of the realities of Japan at the moment will quickly realise how absurd it all is.

LOL, don't worry martin11, the bit about Fiats etc is just an "in joke" because I promote Fiat and VW cars quite a lot and tend to come off as a bit biased. Its only intended to be humour.

richardmayes is spot on about the "one chance to protect your health" once you have radioactive hot particles lodged in your lungs, intestine etc they are with you for life.

cpnnz, Jun 4, 7:58am
not desperate, just Googled it!

unbeatabull, Jun 4, 8:04am
We had a small Australian Gecko in a new Territory not that long ago.

Definately something to be weary of . luckily where I work we don't really deal with many Jap Imports.

fullom, Jun 4, 9:31am
I saw on the tv1 news the other day aschool bus in Northland with the destination Fukushima (I could read the Japanese writing). Must be a few of those floating around NZ at the moment. Another thing I see very often are the big buses and Trucks that used to be mobile X-Ray machine trucks in Japan being driven round in NZ. I doubt very much the owners would suspect what they used to be.They must be highly radioactive.

elect70, Jun 4, 12:30pm
Eh what form of radio activity doent show on a geiger counter .!I thought all vehiclesnow coming from japan were all checked . Whatinstrumentdid this uni guy have thatpiocked it up yet customs couldnt. This is serious stuffweought to know .

savanna71, Jun 4, 12:44pm
Hows that tinfoil hat fit Jazz,

icemans1, Jun 4, 12:49pm
wouldn't surprise me if people are getting paid to let cars slip through customs

savanna71, Jun 4, 12:52pm
What about the cars imported from Australia! i think your being just a wee bit paranoid there

bigfatmat1, Jun 4, 12:56pm
Do they glow in the dark! That would be pretty cool.

I hear these are from fukishima cat lab

Thank you for the info Jazz - it's good to be aware of such potential risks : )

This thread has gone 48 posts and still no confirmed source!

What a load of Shite, "Hot Particles" cannot be detected
Read up on Hot Particles and you will find that they are easily detected with a Geiger counter.

God you are a muppet

Probably the Air Filter is emitting the same amount of dangerous radiation as a banana.
