The left cv in my car clicks badly, the whole joint needs to be replaced but i can't afford to do it right now. Will the car pass a wof! i replaced the boots so there won't be any visual sign of wear.
Thanks.

Clicks all the time or only when turning!
What condition are the CV boots in!

sharchew, Jun 13, 2:06pm
They will notice it as soon as they drive it

sterid01, Jun 13, 2:07pm
yes they wont notice mines been clicking for years and still keeps going strong , not sure if its bad for the car (maybe wheel bearings or gas consumption)

lynduh, Jun 13, 2:07pm
only when turning, even the slightest bend. the boots are new, replaced it only to find it still clicks.

jasongroves, Jun 13, 2:11pm
Not a WOF issue.
Boots have nothing to do with clicking.they keep grease in and dust etc out.

callum.irvine, Jun 13, 2:14pm
Split boots: warning only (unless grease has been thrown onto brakes, then can fail)
Joint itself: Fail (if noticed)

ceebee2, Jun 13, 3:12pm
Its only about $90.00 to replace the entire joint (Outer)

callum.irvine, Jun 13, 3:47pm
Yep, was a waste of money just replacing the boots. If it was already clicking the damage was done.

steve98h, Jun 13, 4:40pm
a split boot is not a fail unless its flicking grease on brake components ie pads disc or hoses.
i noisey or "clicking" jint is most definatly a fail for a wof.

hope this helps, steve (wof inspector)

Over many many years of owning vehicles & repairing many other vehicles, have NEVER been failed for a wof on a cv that ONLY clicks on tight turns.
If it clicks on slight turns (never mind sharp) or clicks in a straight line then YEP, it's a fail for sure.
Partly depends on if it's a "click" of a "clack/ thud"type sound, defining the amount of wear.

Anyone got a VIRM reference on CV joints!

johnf_456, Jun 13, 7:47pm

steve98h, Jun 13, 8:00pm
i cant remember where it is in the virm but it is in there. when i had my audit a couple months ago the inspector brought it up and said new law is any noise at all from a cv is a instant fail.

steve312, Jun 14, 6:42am
There has been nothing official come through to support your testing officers claim.

The current applicable bit in the VIRM is section 10.2. Hubs and axles.Condition 1 is the only possible bit that applies (The components of the assembly must be in good condition)Reasons for rejection 3c (is significantly damaged, distorted or has deteriorated)

That being said, I do not fail a vehicle for noisey CVs unless they are really bad.I note them if they click when turning and or have split boots but would not fail them unless the CVs were throwing grease onto the brakes or the CVs click nearly all of the time.

All comes down to a bit of common sense I would have thought. Is it going to affect the safety of the vehicle!Otherwise we all end up like VTNZ and fail vehicles just because we can.

gofer0007, Jun 14, 10:40am
The split boot is not prolem .i had two Golfs with torn boots that absolutely coverd the caliper and shock in grease and they pass it every time.Go figure, bright sparks hey!

jasongroves, Jun 14, 10:50am
I reckon the real bright spark is the person who knows that their vehicle has split CV boots, causing grease to cover their brakes and shocks in grease, and allowing dirt etc into the CV.and does nothing about it.
Go figure!

steve312, Jun 14, 10:57am
LOL.

Amazing how many there are out there.

nzoomed, Jun 14, 12:53pm
My CV joint has made a grinding, clonking noise for years, mainly when turning corners VTNZ never picked it up, but it broke on me last week.
Its not really a saftey issue though, just means you cant drive, mine broke down at the lights, the cage has completley collapsed, ive got it apart now.
I originally thought it was a universal joint, but found out its the CV joint that has been making this noise.

00quattro00, Jun 14, 6:51pm
Is it bad in reverse! You could swap it over with the other side and have it running the other way

a.woodrow, Jun 14, 7:08pm
uhm no that's not how they work

xs1100, Jun 14, 7:15pm
why should they when they have a accident it will be someone elses fault.you sir are thinking of pre clark days with personal responsibility long gone done and dusted

supernova2, Jun 14, 7:47pm
Looked there didn't find it so exactly which page please.

franc123, Jun 14, 8:33pm
Lol good point, its exactly that ingrained attitude thats no doubt causing concern for those folk at the transport ministry/nzta who are scoping this reform package for the wof system as we speak. We have that many steering wheel wielding sheep on our roads that are so dependent on having nanny state tell them what to do and when to do it that when the time comes to put more personal responsibility on vehicle owners there will be widespread confusion. Some are even that thick that they think wofs are the same as servicing and are some sort of guarantee that the car won't need attention for another six or twelve months.

supernova2, Jun 14, 9:37pm
I've done that on an old clunker and it does work, well it did it this case.
