Husband has had two Toyota utes over the years, done 100's of 1000's of K's. His latest one looks to be nearing the end of its days. If he went for a change of make, what other brands are known for long life. Talking about 1990's cheapies here, up to $5000.

Why not go for another Toyota then.

Couriers are usually pretty hardy in the 90s region.

hilux is the pick of the bunch in those days.that's why hilux's hold their value far better than they should now

He may do but good utes of that era are a bit thin on the ground. It was a 'what would you get if you couldn't find a Hilux question and we were discussing other models but don't know which ones are long lived and pretty much trouble free. So. I thought I would ask you knowledgable chaps.

Honestly there's not much. 2wd couriers are ok, nissan navaras are ok, heavy on gas though and still 80's shape. I would be looking for another toyota

Nissan Navara 2.7 diesel or Ford Courier / Mazda B2200, preferably the ones with a 2.2 litre 12 valve petrol motors.

So, whats wrong with his current Toyota. Could well be cheaper to get his current vehicle repaired rather then spend a lot on another s/h vehicle with unknown history.

2.7 nissan navara is pretty much bombproof

When you finish laugh'n ya tits off fordcrzy could you elaborate in further detail what is the cause for such a response.I'd appreciate any info before lay'n out me hard earned coin on a vehicle.cheers.

The only thing you need to look out for on a 2WD Triton is its gearbox, it should last well if you don't hammer it. And bottom ball joints, which are easily replaced anyway.
2.4 litre petrol engine is also good, cambelts are easily replaced, under 2 hours.

It's up to you what you get, but I do service and repair a lot of utes as I work in a country garage. From what I've seen and driven, the best 2wd utes (imo) are Mazda Bounty / Ford Courier 2.5 turbo diesel (excellent power and torque), 2000 - 2006 models and the last of the L series diesel powered Toyota Hilux. Although they are joke when you compare its power and torque figures with Mazda's WL-T diesel. Another good ute is a Holden Rodeo, either 2.8 or 3.0 litre diesel, but my god, they are noisy.
As with any diesel, particularly Mazda and Toyota, they don't like to be overheated, otherwise, new heads will be required.
In the last 18 months, I've replaced 6 Toyota L series heads, 1 Hiace (985 000kms), 5 Hiluxes (blocked radiator with grass, mud and cow shit) and 3 Mazda WL-T 2.5 diesels, 1 4WD Bounty (due to an externally blocked radiator) and 2 4WD Couriers, both had leaking radiators for a long time.

Yes they are a good donk especially if you like fixing oil leaks all the time
mrfxit,

& the whole point of that message was
FIX & KEEP CLEAN YA RADIATOR Do it on a regular basis & you won't have any problems (mostly)

The ones that I come across are bone dry, and if they do leak oil, it's usually from the oil pressure switch, which is up high teed into a pipe in front of the injector pump.
However, a lot of 4M40 powered Pajeros and Delicas (ex Japan) seem to be having problems with oil leaks, but not Tritons. A good thing to check anyway. Any signs of oil around the turbo and its plumbing is an indication of a tired engine.
