I hope the driver and their co are both OK and safety gear has done its job.

Bit unusal for a crash that bad in a Targa is it not!

socram, Jun 10, 11:49am
No!Targa is renowned for drivers (particularly the inexperienced ones) going beyond the limits of their ability - especially on prologue stages.

There was one new driver who spent a fortune on getting a potent car built by a reputable builder and within the first stage, had gone off the road and smacked into a tree.Car hasn't been seen since.

Quoted news report doesn't say what car or class, so maybe someone can enlighten us!

Remember that famous Groundsky pic of the 'show off cop' who thought he'd show these wussy drivers how to do it, and ploughed into a ditch!

supernova2, Jun 10, 12:28pm
Re the car hits tree case I thought i saw an article somewhere about that car being rebuilt into a new shell which was made out of two other shells.Could have been a different incident/car I guess.Yes who could forget the "cop idiot".Probably been promoted to road safety educator by now.Anyway do hope the crew come out of the incident without long term problems.

any ideas on who it was!

i heardon the grapevine it was a late modle WRX but not sure how accurate that is

bamz1, Jun 10, 12:54pm
i was navagator in a falcon xp 289 coupe in 2002 targa, wrote car off on 2nd day, driver going to hard, waste of a nice car

socram, Jun 10, 1:58pm
The one I referred to was a fibreglass bodied car with V8 power.

geedubu, Jun 10, 2:25pm
Targas are more challenging than I had thought as a late entrant into motorsports.Open roads without the design protection of a circuit, trees and fences all around.I am a fan of track days as the first go-fast experience!

kcf, Jun 10, 2:51pm
Scoular's apparently.

johnf_456, Jun 10, 3:45pm
Sure was one big mess. I was their this weekend, targas are not as easy as, what one thinks. Even experienced drivers have being caught out this weekend.

morrisman1, Jun 10, 4:24pm
Ouch, that photo looks nasty. I can see why the article mentioned leg injuries

grangies, Jun 10, 4:29pm
Yikes.

Car vs thick concrete.

Concrete always wins no matter what the car is.

grangies, Jun 10, 4:31pm
Also. What is the orange sheet for over the back of the vehicle!

amuso, Jun 10, 4:32pm
I wonder why it is that -
1. Virtually no photos to date (TV1 news showed a pic similar to above)
2. No video
3. Not yet any names
Crash was 8:30am this morning.
Seems odd in this day of the media falling over themselves to be first to publish news with all the details.

serf407, Jun 10, 5:08pm
There have been a few injury accidents on Targa events over the years.
e.g http://www.hawkesbaytoday.co.nz/news/bay-driver-crashes-out-of-targa-rally/936133/

Stage rally events in NZ have also had a number of injury accidents as well.

The media was not allowed anywhere near the scene a couple of boulshy firemen and cops saw to that. The photo you see above was taken by one of the crew that came in the helicopter and from what i have heard the driver did not come out of the car complete, and the co driver has some internal injuries. i have seen some pictures from a different angle and you can see parts of the front of the car up against the rear wheel arch

The picture explains all, basically they've run into a ferroconcrete sword. Pretty unlucky to run into the worst thing out there that you could. Bridges have dealt to a fair few rally cars over the years.

kcf, Jun 11, 7:05am
Good.Medical and emergency personel need to be at the scene of an accident.Vultures do not.

my brother in law had a massive crash also, as said above that WRX crashed about 8:30am. that stage was shut down, and doubled the next stage (this is what my sister was telling me) On the next stage they were in their M3 and stated their was gravel 4KMs in. at 4Ks in they came accross a small patch of gravel, surely that cant be it, but it was at the right Ks down the road, so thought it was, next corner the road turns full gravel, and their sitting on warp nine, left side of the car side swiped 2x totara trees, and was heading straight for a 3rd one as a full head on, the brother in law hooks it left, threw a fence and came back up on the road side swiping the 3rd totara tree on the drivers side door.

socram, Jun 11, 8:02am
Yup!
Totally agree with the post about vultures.

According to the Herald (front page news - never normally much motorsport coverage unless it is a tragedy) the family are refusing to allow details of the injuries and progress to be published - and good on them for that.

modie61, Jun 11, 8:36am
The media is all about sensationalism im afraid.

sr2, Jun 11, 10:26am
We arrived full noise at the scene about 5 minutes after the crash and it was a sobering sight to say the least; there were quite a few of us crews shaken up and driving a lot slower than usual in the following stage. It??
