All went downhill when AA went from being a Motorist Organisation to a business.Having said that haven't heard of many problems with the local AA service centres but maybe I dont listen to the right or wrong people.

I used to have a contact in Albany who "reconditions" them and offers a 12 month warranty but cannot for the life of me remember who he is. I think he lifts the lidand re-solders them. Usually a dry joint.

sounds likeeither the idle stepper motor ; it take it out of its housing and screw the plunger half way in, disconnect the wiring to it ,and put it back in place with the wiring off;if the car starts and does not stall ;thats it ;or the crank sensor is on the way out,it is under the distributor usually get a partsor work shop Manuel from the library, or down load a free on from thenett . the crank case sensor is just a fine wire magnet pick up ,but they can get an intermittent fault in them ,and just fail from oldage, the only other thing is the contol computer for both items called a ECU,if there is a fault there a decent Auto sparky should pick it up.
