Diff trans slipping?

doomy999, Jul 12, 11:22am
98 Fairmont.
When going to turn and putting foot down on the gas sometimes something slips. engine starts to rev then something engages and its away.
Only dies it briefly.
This morning when it did it, I slammed my foot down to see what would happen. The car started to rev then there was a loud bang from possibly the diff area and the tyres suddenly grabbed making the tyres squeal.

I would have thought the trans was the problem as I didnt think there was anything in the diff that could slip. Im assuming its a standard diff, not LSD as it easily spins one wheel.
But the loud bangthis morning seemed to come from the rear of the car.
Any thoughts as to what this could be. Diff oil hasnt been checked in years probably so thats my next step but I cant see lack of oil in the diff causing antying to slip. Obviously im no mechanic lol
Any thoughts please!

Low trans fluid. You go around corners and fluid flows away from the filter pick up and you lose drive for a second. Will better when warm. On a 98 mi9ght not have a dip stick will be a 16mm bung on the right/rear of the trans housing.

Diffs dont slip they chew up gears and blow to bits. it'll be low trans fluid I got a coon off a guy that thought it was stuffed for $300 doing the same thing. topped up the trans fluid and it was smooth as sold it for $2500.

Cool story. So you took him a few packs of beer around eh.! Or split the profit with him, right.!

gadgit3, Jul 12, 2:07pm
Hell no, was parked on the side of the road with $300 in the window. I gave him what he wanted and not a penny less. why should I owe any more then what someone was asking!

go buy a trans oil filter and a pan gasket. It sounds like it has been neglected a bit, easy to fit and not expensive.

and check the bushes on the rear drag links
the bang from the back would be the pinion hitting the floor . and the drag links are supposed to stop them doing that

bellky, Jul 12, 3:52pm
I thought that was the job of bumpstops. And drag links are a steering component, you mean upper and lower trailing arms lol.

skin1235, Jul 12, 3:57pm
yep, upper and trailing arms doh. blond moment!
seems I have more of these more often now

bellky, Jul 12, 3:58pm
Sorry mate I was in a bad mood. You took it nicely - respect to you.

skin1235, Jul 12, 4:04pm
I took two tramadol at lunchtime - pinched a nerve in my back
plus I've in the process of quitting the cigs

I am so strung out on pain, drugs, and nicotine deprivation if you rush at me with a machete AND a machine gun I'd probably continue to smile the smile of the oblivious

friendly_prawn, Jul 12, 4:15pm
boy are you mean.
I would have given him the $2500 as well as let him keep the original $300 and i would have given him another $1000 since he waskind enough to let you diganose and fix something he was obviously too lazy to bother with himself. I reckon all up you owe him at least $3800 you big meany you.

skyblue17, Jul 12, 4:19pm
Lol. no need to exaggerate

net_oz, Jul 12, 5:52pm
Sounds like someone maybe should.

bellky, Jul 12, 6:06pm
Hope you don't mean me! And who are you!

xpfairmont, Jul 13, 11:29am
Sounds like you've blown your diff, putting foot down like that wouldn't have helped. they sometimes kind-of work once blown but you'll get stuck somewhere eventually.

xpfairmont, Jul 13, 11:31am
I've blown a few and they do slip, but they are already stuffed at that stage.

gadgit3, Jul 13, 12:20pm
Yea I've had my fair share of blowen diffs. but the coon I had made a hell of a bang in the rear when the trans slipped then as you back off it throws into gear and the noise he'll be hearing is the slop in the drive line as it's taken up.
If you loose all the teeth on the crown/pinion of the diff then yea I could under stand slip but then you would be getting a heap of banging and all the time not just when you put ya foot down.

xpfairmont, Jul 13, 12:30pm
Yes, I think you're right. I blew a band in a C4 and it done what you said above.
I can't remember if the diff that I blew was banging all the time once engaged (going back to 2002). It sure made lots of noise taking of at the lights but got it home and up a very steep driveway (after a few attempts)

supernova2, Jul 13, 2:56pm
I fixed a mini once that had taken 4 teeth off the crown wheel. That was a very interesting drive rev, bang, drive, rev, bang, drive, rev, bang, drive etc.

skiff1, Jul 13, 5:41pm
a know all

doomy999, Jul 13, 9:52pm
so two differing opinions.
Could be diff, could be trans.
Monday I'll get the trans serviced and see if that fixes the problem.
If not, then what is needed to sort the diff.

doomy999, Jul 13, 9:54pm
Still cant see it being the diff.
If teethwere missing Im sure it would be noisey as.
If no teeth mssing how else could it be slipping!
After listening to you guys, Im thinking trans.
Will get back to you after trans service. Never realised it was so expensive though. Quote today was $265.00 inclusive.

budgel, Jul 14, 4:44pm
Make sure you get your filter and oil included in that.
