omg they did not say that on top gear! they said 1001hp to go over 400km/h and it's a 2.5ton car no diesel engine could eva reach that speed, I haven't heard yet anyway.its a 7ltr w16 engine with 4 turbo chargers

There's your problem, taking technical advice from TopGear! I love the show for entertainment value, but they certainly do gloss over anything remotely technical, and do state some absolute clangers from time to time.

The entertainment value was OK for a while but it quickly got repetitive and tiresome. I haven't watched it for years now.

I had a motorcycle that produced a great deal of torque for the engine size. On paper, using the torque/weight ratio, it would outperform many motorbikes with a larger engine. And it could, too. But only if the gearbox was used to keep the engine speed between 6000 and 7500.

This machine was fun to ride, and a real challenge to get peak performance out of. Because of it's torque characteristics - not to mention mediocre handling, it also killed a fair percentage of riders who weren't used to that type of power delivery.

(Any guesses!)

I currently have a 4 wheeler that has the peak torque figure quoted at just 1950 rpm, although a look at the graphs reveal peak is at around 2600. The stated figure gives a good indication of a wide spread of useful engine power, which is actually realized in day-to-day driving. It's not a diesel, either.

Torque (in lb/ft) X RPM, then divided by a constant (IIRC that is 5252) givesBHP. I don't know the conversion for the more modern values, but it would be easy enough to work out.

On the graph (dyno readout) a gentle curve of torque that achieves, say, 80 percent of it's peak low down in the rev range is likely to be the most useful for day to day driving. The other type (such as the curve for my old motorbike, which started low, climbed at a shallow gradient, then suddenly shot up the graph to peak at 6500 rpm) is less usable (but much more fun) and described as "peaky".

It was a Mach 3. Till I killed it. :(

The H2 had a slightly more manageable spread of torque.starting at about 4000. Lot more of it, though.

Wasnt Top Gear, it was Doco on the making of it (the Veyron).And I dont pretend to really know alot about torque V HP. All I know and care about is when you put your foot down or twist the throttle you move off.

Agree.that way if you change down you instantly get more torque with the rev increase .which also allows you to change down again and get even more torque.lol.same car 2 versions.sports and luxury. the sports has 300hp but lower torque also trans settings are different.the luxury has 275hp and different trans settings also.same block and box different crank and cams.the 275hp has a higher redline and more top end pull.

I have been wondering, often, what it would be like to drive a vehicle equipped with an engine that had a totally flat torque "curve" (ie the same amount of torque no matter how fast, or slow, you're going).

AND
Torque= How far ya move the safety blocks
