Older BMWs

The only BMWs I really lust after are the big 1970s coupes with the old big-block straight sixes. i.e. the E9 (3.0 CS) and to a slightly lesser extent the E24 (633CSi / 635CSi). To me there's something very RIGHT about fast cars of the 1970s and early 80s.

The E24s are tantalisingly cheap on Trademe. but with a young family I just can't take a chance on a new toy car at the moment!

elect70, Jul 12, 12:59pm
^^^I had 635 for 6 years but in the end parts became near impossible to getBMWstoppedparts for the classics years ago, engine parts were Okthrough aftermarketbutthings like gearbox bearings unobtainable anywhere in the world, have to be remade @$$$

hornnett, Jul 12, 3:17pm
There is another possible reason, they areexcrement.

mgmad, Jul 12, 3:32pm
And that's why BMW are one of the most profitable car manufacturers in the world.

hornnett, Jul 12, 3:49pm
Is that because they build rubbish and sell them as quality! And ONE of the most profitable means what!I see that BMW was beaten byHyundai.lol.

vtecnet, Jul 12, 4:29pm
My 1989 BMW 325i is reliable as still after 23 years and 228,000ks, as was my 1996 528i, 1997 320i and 1990 320i and another 325i I had.

I am currently converting it to manual, to make it more of a drivers car.

I have no experience with the 4 Cylinder models however, as I only like 6's and 8's as far as BMW's go.

zephyrheaven, Jul 12, 4:45pm
BMW's are just German Corolla's of that era, you can buy parts from the local dairy almost!
We have an E46 Wagon & wont look back now, will upgrade as time goes on but for now its a fantastic safe little car that suits wifey to a tee - and I dont hate driving it on long trips like everything else we've had

richardmayes, Jul 12, 5:01pm
It's possible that your ideas are excrement too.!

Maybe we should settle it by lining up a BMW alongside you in your running shoes, and see which can get to Cape Reinga first with the fewest breakdowns!

Or perhaps it would be better if you could just explain in what way BMWs are "excrement!"

hawat, Jul 12, 5:07pm
+1. I can understand some posters views but high bmw maintenance costs are a popular myth. Our car is 1998 and has only blown a header tank. As for regular maintenance costs, if you go to the dealers they will sting you. I've got a specialist service outfit which isn't a dealer and their prices are same as all others. What has caused your negative views hornet!

hawat, Jul 12, 5:11pm
Yep good result for Hyundai but notice that they also beat Mercedes. AND those results don't include Kia! Don't think they would displace Ford at number 2 but might pass gm if Kia was added.

hornnett, Jul 12, 6:17pm
Ok deal I run and you drive and then walk.lol
"excrement" well let me see.I gather you own one and I have fixed many.

hornnett, Jul 12, 6:19pm
From working on them, does that count!

hornnett, Jul 12, 6:23pm
Yea mate I wouldnt look back either just keep walking.
You can tell a lot about people by the cars they buy and old BMW scream out try hard but still haven't made it.

hawat, Jul 12, 6:33pm
Fair enough but for every bad story on these pages there is a good one. Also bit unfair to say try hards and didn't make it. I couldn't afford a new one but bought one that was 8 years old and it has been everything I expected. Power, reliability, driving pleasure, road holding, German quality and robustness. Even down to the paintwork, toolkit in the boot etc etc. Only issue we have had is blown header tank. Going on to 6 years now in our care.

hawat, Jul 12, 7:18pm
As you can see from other posters, there are bmw's that end up costing you but no more than other makes. We bought an 8 year old car, have had it for 6 years and there have been bugger all things go wrong with it. When you have to get work done on it find a garage that specialises in bmw's (not a dealer) and go there. Bet there are some in Wgtn or the Hutt. I found 2 in North Shore and picked one. Turned out fantastic. Ask posters on here. They'll tell you. The cars are as good as their reputation just choose carefully, same as always.

fiatracer, Jul 12, 7:33pm
gotta remember, some peoples only experience of BMWs is a half-f****d clocked import E36 that's been through the hands of 6 wannabe cap wearers dreaming of "VIP RYDZ".

They're entitled to have a negative view. Doesn't make it a good representation of the marque.

hawat, Jul 12, 8:26pm
Of course, never thought of that. Perhaps go for NZ new! But even then. A friend of our daughter got a new 320i for her birthday, never put oil in for 2 years and only took it through car wash. She only lifted the bonnet to add water to the windscreen washer bottle. The car would sparkle but dirty wheels. Dead giveaway. The person who bought that next would get a clunker.

pollymay, Jul 13, 1:05am
Who had a cry and reported my post!

alltorque350, Jul 13, 5:00am
That is more or less the kind of car the original poster was talking about. Most of the people saying their Beamer is great are talking about higher spec models. My advice is still 'STAY AWAY'

zephyrheaven, Jul 13, 5:20am

Yes, thats right - I cant remember what you have made tho - apart from about 5 accounts to hide behind! Keep trolling = I know how big that right arm of yours must be getting by now, what an excellent addition to this forum you have been during the school holidays - back to reality on monday however - in the dunce corner again

antil33tnz, Jul 13, 6:22am
Pretty much this. I have an E34 and an E30. E34 Touring, 250,000km. Drives amazingly smooth. Can't beat an NZ New BMW that's been looked after.

skyblue17, Jul 13, 7:26am
2 years on the same oil isn't such a crime. Chances are the car didn't burn a drop and good oil lasts OK.

hornnett, Jul 13, 3:10pm
Was trolling and caught you,a little under size the girls say but hey what does it matter.I still have to much pride to drive a BMW its a bit like driving an MX5 only you have come out of the closet.

sr2, Jul 13, 3:27pm
Rather apt use of the word "trolling".

hornnett, Jul 13, 3:32pm
Gosh mate not my type, but hey go for it.
