Hi there, this may be a silly question but I am needing a towball for the car and have just realised there are two sizes.Does anyone know if most garage hire trailers would use the same size or could they all be different! Towball I am looking at is 1 7/8".Thanks.

You need to ask the garage.
1 7/8" (48mm) is the standard size.

1 7/8 is nz standard on most trailers. 50mm or 2 inch is more from industrial or USA stuff. You can even get tow balls that convert between the sizes. Just go to supercheep etc and get 1 7/8 for most applications.

I carry both sizes and change the towball if I need to, it's a pain in the arse.

While 95% of equipment uses 1.7/8! I wouldn't call 50mm standard myself

I changed my tow hitches to 50mm to stop everyone else borrowing the trailers. Worked so far.

Slightly OT, but still funny.
Years ago, my sister and her husband bought a new (to them) car with a towbar. One day, BIL went to the servo to hire a trailer for something and the hitch wouldn't fit.
Someone told him their were two different size towballs, and he figured he must have the "other" one (from the trailer) so he'd take the towball off his car (for reference) and go to Repco and buy the other one.
Not being mechanically minded, and not having many tools, he skinned his knuckles trying to take the ball off with vice grips.
Eventually, he figured out that there was a cover on the towball he was trying to remove.

You can get an easy change option where it is a simple no tools job to change from one size to the other, but they are not cheap. Set an 1.7/8 but be careful when you hire a trailer with a combination coupling that you use it in 1.7/8 mode and not 50mm mode.
