So, how do I get this stupid insert out?

Some one has put a recoil into the sump of this 4.0 falcon. When I tried to put the plug back in the insert broke and 15mm or so of it fell out with the sump plug. How do I get the rest of the recoil out!

Do I need to put a recoil back in it or will it be okay to just put a thread right into the sump!

Personally. I would be looking at dropping the sump & fix it properly.
Any steel fragments from the old hole/drillings & the helicoil could be floating around in there now & later if repaired in place again

I didn't have a real good look but I think the sump on this thing is a real bastard to get out.

It's actually a good question - how do you get part of a recoil out of the hole.I've never had to do it but I guess it not easy. In your example I'd say you should drop the sump and go from there simply because of the problem of getting all the swarf out of the sump.Mindyou the swarf should, and I say should with caution, just drop to the bottom and float out in the oil when you change it.I assume there is a pump screen so the metal bits shouldn't do any damage

try re threading with the helicoil tap.this should remove whats left of the coil, and then insert a new coil, but you would want to be experienced at this maneuver.i'd tow it to an engine reco shop and let them do it !

A pick and long nose pliers. With the pick you can lift the end of the recoil then grab it with the pliers and pull. job done, done a few myself this way.

Thats pretty much what my initial thought was too.Would depend on the size of the hole and depth of thge remains I guess along with access and vision etc.Glad it not me having to do it.

BA sumps aren't that bad to get off, Its the FG and Territory sumps that are a mission.

Just think if you had a car made back in the 50's it was a regular service item to remove and clean sump about every 20,000mls.

I removed the sump of my 740i the day I got it to clean it out, some cars have two sumps - top and bottom so it makes it quite easy.

agree, theyre just a coiled wire so once you pick the end enough to grab with pliers then just pull down
