ariarne, Jul 4, 5:23pm

go for it, dont run outa fuel

peril787b1, Jul 4, 6:46pm
No, a scooter is not capable of motorway speeds and is therefore not legal to be used on a motorway, of which the harbour bridge is. So illegal without question.

bashfulbro, Jul 4, 6:54pm
For someactivities, on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, itis not classified as Motorway.Hikoi`s come to mind, and there are others, maybe riding scooters is OK.if it`s motorised.

dr.doolittle, Jul 4, 6:55pm
How badly do you want to get to 'the other side' !

peril787b1, Jul 4, 6:58pm
I apologise for not taking maxi scooters into consideration. Most when referring to a scooter, mean a 50cc, under 2kw, 50 km/h max speed jobbie.http://www.motorcycletrader.co.nz/View/Article/Scooter-legalities/530.aspx!Ntt=scooter+legalities&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&N=0&Ntk=All

Speedo might but wil the scooter!.Quite possibly will.Mate had a Bergman and whilst it looked like a scooter it went like a race bike.

lotus7s3, Jul 4, 10:43pm
I ride my 125cc scooter over the bridge most days.Just be careful if its windy.

trogedon, Jul 5, 6:23am
Performance bike did a test on a 650 one. They were passing guys on sports bikes at a track day!

trogedon, Jul 5, 6:24am
If scooters (piddly engined ones) can't go on the Harbour Bridge now we don't want them using the walking and cycling lane when its added.

timmo1, Jul 5, 6:58am
Yep those things haul.

friendly_prawn, Jul 5, 7:04am
Not sure they would want to any way now the council have decided to toll the foot / cycle add on lane.

franko171, Jul 5, 7:05am
i have a Bergman 400 just waiting for good weather to take it for a run steped up from a 150 honda so dont want to get to keen on damp rds

mikek, Jul 5, 7:08am
Less than 50cc are illegal on any motorway, over can but only if they can keep up with the flow of traffic (ie travel at 100km/h) which basically means a 100cc+ version.Even if you have one, prepare to be pulled over continuously by cops thinking you dont.Pretty dangerous way to travel on the motorway as well, almost certain death if you come off at top speed on the motorway.

Ok now can you show the legeslation that says that!
Nit picking a bit but the HB isn't a 100km/h zone and hasn't been for many years. So "a person" on a 50cc scooter could take the last onramp from town -being at the base of the HB then take the first offramp and be in a 80km/h max zone all the time. Heading back they could take the onewa onramp and again the first offramp-a bit further but still 80km/h zoned
If they did so in ":rush hour" traffic that is mostly travelling at 40-70km/h they would go unoticed.
Um but "that person" would likely get very bored with 50km/h -- and bore the scoot to 65cc,fit a different auto clutch, a bigger carb and gut the exhaust out so the scoot is an easy 70km/h machine. --Dunno who would do that though

xpfairmont, Jul 5, 10:04am
Not if someone like Gerry Brownlee is sitting on it

socram, Jul 5, 1:51pm
Define "Motorway".'Cos Auckland doesn't have any.

Strictly speaking, under 50cc is a moped, not a scooter. Most of them are death traps, as my wife's won't even carry her modest weight up our street at more than about 10kmh, so with less than 50kms on the clock, I locked it away so that she couldn't use it.

I think it's being incorrectly described here. The actual rule is around speed, not cc rating or power.

Here:
http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2004/0427/latest/DLM303055.html

However that does rely on it being a motorway. I have no idea about that, don't get up there much.

xpfairmont, Jul 5, 2:12pm
That's funny because when I turn off the bridge and head up Shelly Beach rd there's a sign that reads Motorway Ends.

bashfulbro, Jul 5, 2:31pm
The Harbour Bridge, .is technically Motorway.however, there are some Motorway regulations that don`t apply on the Bridge, fromFanshawe St.To Onewa Road.

nicolag, Jul 16, 8:10pm
that is corrrect my employee rode our 50cc over and back a several times was a bit scary though but yes bridge is not classified as motorway as such,we rung the Police at the time to make sure

outbidyou2, Jul 16, 8:36pm
ffs

happs1, Jul 16, 8:56pm
I had a 350cc scooter only problem was keeping at the speed limit and not scraping the side guards around corners . lol

richardmayes, Jul 16, 8:59pm
You can, if your bike is fast enough. But I just wouldn't.

My first car was yellow with heaps of bright chrome trim around both ends. That didn't stop some dopey soccer mum in a 4x4 who wasn't looking where she was going from rear ending it, hard enough to write it off, on the northern approach to the HarbourBridge.

I wouldn't be here now typing this if I'd been driving a smaller car, let alone riding a bike.

So you won't ever see me on two wheels on any motorway. The petrol & parking savings are just not worth the risk.

danchop, Jul 17, 10:19am
i ride a 125cc scooter on the motorway all day and have never been stopped by police for thinking its not fast enough, most times im in the fast lane as well because its so fast
