We recently purchased a car, which needed some work on the timing which was fine. Turns out, less than a week later that it actually needs a new engine or to be scrapped.
Was advertised being down on power & noisy, driving fine
Should the seller be responsible for this (as he sells many cars and seemingly has a good knowledge of cars in general I fail to see how he missed that) or do we just have to suck up the purchase of a lemon!
Cheers!

In what way is a car that is down on power and noisy, then needs a new engine, a lemon!

Did you get an assessment from a professional before agreeing to buy!. I sure as hell would have been if the seller stated there was a noise issue with the engine.

What did the pre-purchace inspection report say!

"or be scrapped" can you please explain what is actually wrong with the engine.

1. Why are you posting using a fake profile! 2. ^^^^ Which makes me think you are taking the piss. 3. If the story is true, it's not the seller's fault, as it was clearly advertised as being "down on power & noisy".

I am guessing there wasn't a pre-purchase inspection! You were informed honestly that the engine was a dud so why is it a lemon! Your fault for not getting any form of check.
You cannot blame the seller at all.

given indeed this is a genuine profile we can't offer legal advice as to what should or shouldn't happen in Australia. I'd suggest contacting your local CAB or equivilant over there. As others have asked. Given it was clearly described as having an engine noise pre purchase what did the pre purchase inspection tell you!

Sounds as though it was advertised as being down on power and noisy.
Exactly what did you expect!

Car engines are only ever "down on power and noisy" when they are in their death throes.
Maybe squirrel that bit of info away for next time!
