Yep I clearly remember those Dodge KEWS that Alexandra Transport Ltd had, I live there and ATL had quite a number of them, earlier on they were Kane's Transport and they ran several Austin Lodestar type trucks in the 1950's up into the early 1960's when ATL took them over.
Bedford "J" series trucks were in the mix too I think.
Mercedes Benz made up a large %of their fleet too around the samedecade and later on.
Fulton & Hogan bought them out then recently the ATL name and business has come back into action again as a separate entity.
Quite a mix of truck makes but Mack featured highly for some time and does still along with the odd Western Star , lots of Nissans/Isuzussome Scania's there for a spell. Even the odd few Sterling/Ford Louisville types, along with odd other "Ring In's."
I even drove the odd one of the old Dodge KEW's plus others occasionally when I was in my early trucking days, noisy damn things!
They came out to my folks family farm/orchard daily during the height of the fruit season to collect consignments of fruit packed in wooden boxes to go via rail (when rail was the thing back then) to the various markets around the country.
Think they were Leyland 375/400 powered, some of the Leyland/ Albion models around the same time used similar cab designs.

great to hear about the dodge kews ema1. mine as got a 350 leyland and 5 speed box with vacum eaton. im putting it back in the old colours. just need to get the purple paint

bashfulbro, Jul 2, 6:10pm
I drove one in the mid 60`s, single drive, we had a couple of othersthe same except they had 375 Leyland engines, they had electric eaton two speed.
We also had two or three tandem drives, i think from memory, they were AEC powered.
Those were great days.

bmc460, Jul 2, 6:28pm
one gotwrecked down here that actually had a v8 perkins in in and a roadranger plus tandem drive. it also had a flat floor cab.it was new to south otago transport.

poppajn, Jul 2, 6:35pm
Wilson & Kennard had a V8 one too, it went to Tulloch,s at Ohai in 1974. Wonder if it was the same one.

I had the pleasure of driving the first 6x4 Fuso brought to NZ by Todd Motors and given to Winstone Ltd Auckland. On the road 16 March 1971.
It had a crap gearbox, 4 speed with overdrive plus a massive constant mesh transfer case. Replaced end of 71 with 13 speed roadranger. It was written off about 1980 after a crash on motorway near Tip Top corner.
Was resurected as a tow wagon at Wellsford, repowered from 240 hp to 280 then 310. Later was retired as a towie and a tip body put on. It is still in working order on a block of land West of Wellsford. Would most likely nor pass a WOF. Have some pics of truck and me as youngsters in 71 and more of the same in November 2010. Don't know who looks worse, the truck or driver. The 4x2 that came at the same time went to RFL and is now at MOTAT, but has a GM V! motor. So not really original
The owner of my old truck offered it to Mitsi dealers but they showed no interest, the same when I offered them the original paperwork- specs etc. Didn't have the decency to reply. Still got them and the price increases every day.

I remember both those Fuso's, when I was at Winstone's it had the Roadranger.RFL had a lot of Fuso's, so most likely drove and worked on the first one.it's in MOTAT, but pretty sure it has the original engine. I was there last weekend, but it's in storage so didn't get to see it again.I didn't like the Roadranger in them - they changed the shift pattern on some, and you made a fool of yourself before you looked on the dash and saw the shift pattern sticker. They also had a 3 position button on the knob, rather than a separate hi/lo on the stick.I would always push the button all the way like on the 2 position. Much preferred driving the LAD cab Hippo with 6 speed and 2 speed with the 680.

bowla3, Jul 3, 5:55am
Yes bashfulbro, that's the one. I have some pics of it from a couple of years back. Have some one arriving later today who knows how to do these things so will put up a copy.

poppajn, Jul 3, 7:04am
This one ended it,s life at Newvale Coal, still there, buried deep with a lot of other old truck,s.

bashfulbro, Jul 3, 1:22pm
What years were you at Winstone`s !, i left in late 1964

bowla3, Jul 3, 1:36pm
Was there twice. First job out of school, 1950, in spare parts store Symonds St. garage for about 8 months.
Then 1966! till 1972. At Symonds St till just before I quit when we all went to Lunn Ave.

bmc460, Jul 3, 2:56pm
i remember you driving a mercedes on a classic truck run and there was two v8 perkins blowingyou into the weeds on hills as well lol. one was a dennis with 510 and the other was my hiline.

ladatrouble, Jul 3, 3:33pm
I was at Winstone's Penrose workshop in 1974 - The Fuso was white by then. What a fantastic purpose built workshop that was.I had my own heated pit, with a heater above the top workbench, and also in the workbench below. It's the only job I've been fired from - I've managed to keep one step ahead of the bosses since.
